Just purchase a 1970 Ford F100 SWB. Very solid body, however it needs a few things. First off when the truck is idling it will jump from park into reverse. Is this in the sterring colume/linkage or something in the tranny? It is a automatic with a 300 straight six. Truck seems to shift through the gears pretty good when rolling down the road. Also I plan on doing a frame up restoration on it and was wondering what you guys think of replacing the 300 with a 302 v-8. Is it cheaper? not much difference in performance?
Ford had issues with their autos jumping out of park. I don't remember the years. My '76 C6 does not do it. I have a 4.9 in my '90 & they are good engines. I do love my 460 though. For a truck I would use the 300 over a 302. Seems like the Windsors just don't have what it takes for long life in a truck. You can easily see 300K miles out of the 300. Congrats on the purchase. Our truck is also a '70 SWB.
3x... I'd keep the six and follow the "keep it simple" principle.
Headers, an Offy intake, and either a 2V or 4V carb and she'll be really happy. Btw, ditch the points if it has'em and go with a Pertronix system. Throw the points/condenser in a baggie and stick in the glove box just in case. But I've installed the Pertronix modules in all of my vintage steel and have never had one go bad... 20 years now.
Congrats on your find and welcome to the brethren.
Nice looking ride. I went with a 390 in my 68 swb.
Mine popped out of park on me once while I was at the gas station. The cotter pin on my column shift was slightly popped up, which caused the shifter to not go completely on gear.
Good luck with the build.
People put the shift lever into Park before setting the parking brake, allowing the truck to roll...just enough...that the parking pawl inside the trans locks up tight.
Now, the lever has to be YANKED out of Park and before too long, the detent's shift gate (that the tab on the shift lever fits into) between Park & Reverse snaps off.
Detent is 7A216 in pic (v v), but don't go by what it looks like, as there's more than one.

Your thoughts?

Nice ride, And Number dummy may very well be correct in his assessment. There is something that is most often over looked. That is the drivers side cab mount. If it is starting to cave under the weight of the cab, as they often do, this changes the length of the shift linkage. So what often times happens is the transmission is never actually put into park, but in the zone between park and reverse. The transmission doesn't "jump" into reverse, but rather "falls" into reverse.
Good looking truck. Ad one to keeping the 6cyl., if you're going with a v8 then go big block v8. Why the frame up restoration tho? Going to be a show truck? Later.

No show, just want to go through everything on the truck. Make it nice, and still have a daily driver. Beside I always wanted to do one.
Thanks for the replies, I checked the linkage tonight and didn't see anything out of whack. I did see a small lever next to where the linkage hooks up to the transmission that looks like it needs to do something besides just hang there. I try to take a pic later.
As for jumping out of park, I have a 67 Galaxie and had the same issue. I couldn't trust it to sit there and idle without having someone in the car with their foot on the brake. Most times I just had to put it in neutral and make sure I had it chocked. A friend came over and made a couple adjustments to the linkage and all is well. Not sure what he did but I hope your fix can be as simple. Nice looking score. I'd probably stay with the 6 also.
Thanks NumberDummy (Bill) I took the steering column apart and found the problem. It was Part # 7a216. Now where would a fellow go to get a new one? Does Ford still get parts that old?
