i have a 2002 f-150, 5.4L i use to tow my camper, I get 10mpg. Talked to a guy pulling a larger camper and gets 17mpg, he claims he installed a K&N filter and it increased his from 10mpg to 17mpg..?

Your 10 mpg is about right for gross combined weights over 8000 lbs.
Use common sense, a stock air filter does not magically make horse power nor is it restrictive to anywhere near that degree.
Remember you have fuel injection not carburation.
You can't hardly get more than 15 running empty and no towing.
Good luck.
