I would love to have a set of Riff Raff boots and a cold side metal pipe.

Is there anything tricky to the hairspray trick or is it as easy as cleaning the pipe with some carb cleaner (or whatever) and then spraying some hair spray on it to help add some tack to the boot? I've got one that's been blowing off regularly. I replaced the clamp today and on the first trip, it blew off again.

Unfortunately I don't have time to get boots here before I leave on a trip this coming Friday, so I hope the hairspray trick works.

Aquanet aerosol hairspray should work well. I used to use it to put
handle bar grips on the motocross bikes. Clean the boot and the pipe
that it's going on and give it a good wet coat and shove it on.
The spray does two things. When still wet it helps the boot slide into
place and when dry it holds it in place. I did find that the aerosol
type is better than the pump type. May have to do with how much water
is in it. It does not take long to dry so work quick and any oil will lessen
the hold.

One other use for the spray is if you have a hand grip that just won't come
off. Peal up an edge and spray it in. This will help to break the bond with the bar.

Tried the hairspray and so far so good. I drove like an old woman to work this morning though. When I get within a mile of the house this afternoon, I'll give 'er hell.

Something else to consider is to actually use a torque wrench on the clamps. The spec is like 11 ft. lbs (don't quote me on that, but its somewhere around there) so I originally thought "oh that's nothing I'll just snug them down."

Well the spring on the clamp makes the torque reading VERY deceptive so its not until you put a torque wrench on it that you actually realize how tight they have to be.

Yeah the replacement clamp I have on there right now doesn't have a spring on it, but the original one did, and I totally stripped it out torquing down on it.

2nd that on the torque wrench

For me its just peace of mind knowing everything is torqued to proper specs. Not a bad idea to get a larger one with ft-lbs and a smaller one with inch-lbs

Sometimes.
Other times I have to point mom or sister the right way.
Sometimes they just ask.

from what ive read on other forums its 6-7 ft-lbs for the clamps... i just wrenched mine till it felt tight enough the ratchet was feeling stiff... im sure its well past 6-7ft-lbs.. main reason they recommend that is to prevent you from damaging the "plastic" intercooler connections... some places ive seen said 9ft-lbs...

Haynes manual doesnt specify from what i can find on that though... wish i had a factory manual on this truck.. but havent gotten to buying one yet..

Well this is my opinion , at 179,000 and on STOCK boots and never had one blow off . there's nothing wrong with ford boots . Mine have been off and on more than most of y'alls but put on using break keen and hair spray . So don't panic if your boots blows off . But when mine do need replacing RIFF RAFF are great and cheaper than ford .

ive only had mine blow off once but it was due to my error.. not the boots.. main reason im looking to replace is because i dont like how spongy the one is.. from ford its $64 before taxes just for the one.. figure $64+tax for 1 vs $120-$150 for all 4 is the better deal...

Argh!!! I thought the hairspray and the new clamp would hold me over, but alas, tonight, I got on her and it blew off again. I'll order new ones tonight... sigh.
