Hey everyone, I'm new to the site here and have a problem that has me stumped. I have a 1996 f150 302 4sp od and can't get it to shut off? The truck sat for 4 years and I bought it not running. Well it's running now and won't shut off. I've replaced the ignition lockout and the ignition switch. I can start the truck using the switch but can't shut it off? Does this mean there's a problem between the switch and battery? Also the plastic rod in the column is moving freely both ways.
Thanks in advance for any help, I'm lost with this one
not sure on the 92 and newer column, but on the older columns this is usually caused by a broken ignition actuator.
you say "the plastic rod is moving freely in both directions" have you tried moving the rod and seeing if the engine shuts off? this will confirm it is a bad actuator.
The '92 and later trucks have a 2-piece plastic actuator assembly, and yours is probably broken.
PM your email to me & I'll send you a .pdf with instructions on how to fix it.
The part I'm not understanding is if I can start the truck using the ignition switch and not the key, wouldn't that rule out a broken actuator if its not shutting off using the switch? Or does the actuator cut the power off rather then the switch? Either way I have the column out if it needs changed.
most of the time when the actuator breaks, it breaks in a way that will not allow the truck to start.
every now and then it will break in a way that it will let the truck start, but not shut off.
