How much boost do the IDITs make stock? I thought I read somewhere that it was limited to around 3 PSI. I was seeing almost 6 yesterday pulling up a long grade at around 65-70 mph (empty). My EGTs were right around 700, they seem to normally run between 400-600 on the highway, 300-400 at lower speeds. Sound about right?
thats about right for stock, not just 3 psi.now if you add weight and put the engine under more load, that 6 would likely turn into 8-9ish.rpms to boost isn't constant.it's engine load proportional.
but anyway, this is where a lot of guys get themselves in trouble.they want to see high boost numbers all the time.the issue is,you go to load up and tow if you work the truck at all, then you can't drive it without your eyes clued to the pyro cus she'll over fuel and send the egt's through the roof at wot under max gross uphill.that can get dangerous.

Thanks for the info. I prefer to see no boost indicated most of the time and drive with an eye towards preserving the motor, not seeing how fast I can pull a heavy load. I've yet to see any smoke from it (except at startup), seems to be in a great state of tune. I'll find out a bit more about it next week when I tow a trailer from CO. back to WY.
I get boost being load dependent, I've owned several turbos, but this is only my second turbo diesel, every other turbo has been a gasser (and in a car).

Could you give an example of a setup or someones setup that would perform this way?

Dude you have nothing to worry about with boost. It is commonly accepted that 15psi is safe on these engines and there are quite a few more running higher than that with no issues.

sure.mine does with the sidewinder.pulling a hill when loaded, the turbo spools super quick and boosts greatly higher per rpm than when empty.normal operating characteristics according to the manual.

you misunderstood. I'm asking the other way around
do i personally know someone with a turbo idi who cranks his fuel up as high as it will go,without any other mods like an inter cooler, and or even go as far as ordering a higher flow ip without any other mods, wire their wg shut, stomp on it,leave a cloud of smoke and watch their boost gauge trying to peg as high as they can when empty,so they can brag about it online or to their buds and then go to actually use their truck only to find out they can't because egt's,coolant, and oil temps climb ridiculously high?
no.i don't.i have a sneaking suspicion it happens though lol.
