360 Intake Question

I've got a 76 F-250 with the 360. It's got the stock 2bbl manifold. I've got a 4bbl Holley 650 sitting on a shelf in my garage and I can get a stock 4bbl manifold for about $50. I was wondering if this would be a viable upgrade or if i should just keep my eyes peeled for a edelbrocker performer 390 or something similar.

I know those manifolds are super heavy and such, but I don't really thing weight is an issue...perhaps i'm wrong.

factory Iron intake is 70+ lbs weight makes it real hard to get manifold on with out jacking up gaskets , if you can wait for a used aluminum intake to pop up on craigslist or Ebay .

With a stock 360, leave the 2 bbl on it.

Alright, thanks for the info. I wasn't sure so i thought i'd ask..

I am running into an issue with my carb, i think. When the truck is warm, the idle is high about 2200rpms, until i pop on the throttle then it drops down to about a 1000 rpm. Any idea what is causing this or what I can do to fix it?

I thought about rebuilding the carb but I'm not sure if that's needed.

Sounds like the fast idle cam is sticking. Just me, but I'd find a 350 or 500 cfm Holley 2 bbl to replace it with.

Depnding on the cost would you advise rebuilding vs replacing?

2100 2v rebuild kit is $20.00 so if you can rebuild it yourself it's a lot cheaper

I would replace it with a newer Holley. Old carbs can be a pain in the "you know what" to rebuild. The newest Autolite 2 bbl carb is now thirty-something years old. Just me but I never had any luck rebuilding old carbs, be it a Holley or an Autolite.

+3, for all the work that you will have to do, you will be very disappointed. Leave it as is.

I'm ok with work...especially when it's sorta beneficial.

That's when an engine hoist comes in handy. FE's are probably the only engine family that you need a hoist to pull and replace the intake.

True, When I install mine with a hoist I lower it to about 1 inch above the motor. I then install a 6" piece of allthread in one front and one rear opposite side bolt holes. Now when you drop the intake you'll have a perfect drop with no gasket damage. Do not use the front and rear valley gaskets. Instead lay a 3/8" bead of ultra-black RTV down, let set for app. 15 minutes and then drop the manifold in place.

I don't see how you can do that when the FE intake bolts are perpendicular to the head face. Never used a bead of sealer in place of the gaskets. End gap needs to be checked before doing that.

I know this will sound silly, but im just trying to get the best gas milage I can outta this old beast. I know I know. Don't need to be mockd. I do know that you can tune them enough to improve the mpg even if it's just slightly. I'll work on rebuilding the carb for now while I keep looking for the intake.

I did find one on craigslist for $200. It's a performer 390. I did shoot the guy an offer for $175 and he said he'd consider it. So maybe i'll just go pick that one up. I've got a holley 650cfm carb sitting on a shelf in my garage that needs a home and what better home to give it then under my hood.

Love you guys with a big erection and have to find a place to put it.

So what if you spend the money and labor and you loose a 1/2 mpg? Oh hell yes it can happen.

If you were building the engine bringing up the compression, adding a cam, it would make better sense. Some of these ol boys are going to get 7.7 mpg up hill, down hill, strong head wind or tail wind.
