What should I do?

I have a 1990 F350 Crew cab 7.3 Diesel that has a Banks turbo and upgraded tranny shifting, electronic trailer brake, camper shell....etc etc. HOWEVER!...the motor just died...not seized completely...it turned over and runs rough...but it apparently dropped oil and was low and I didn't know it. Is there anything to do with this truck now...an engine rebuild sound like a lot of work....is it better to part it out?

I also have a 1984 F250 extra cab 6.9 Diesel that works but the C6? tranny is bad and needs servicing, has a shell and a one ton rear end not the 3/4 ton it came with....again..part out or fix?

Any help?

I don't need either one as I don't use them for work any more and would like a smaller fuel efficient car or motorcycle to do my sales work. My father in law has a truck I can borrow if I need to haul something or pull something.

Thanks for info.

Compression test on the 7.3?
About the only way to kill a 7.3 is by dusting... or waay to far advanced injection timing...
If you still got good compression look at injection/ electrical systems....

Erk...
Your 7.3 is an idi with a turbo kit isnt it...?
If so... check injection pump...

Or sell it to me?
I gotta dollar!

a rebuild is not bad, if you have that much in it you will never get the money out of it so fix it and have fun.

Whoa!!! Let's back this bus waaay up. {beep - beep - beep}

This is not a gasser. When you run low on oil, the injectors can't function properly (misfires and runs rough), but it can't run to a point where the engine burns up/seizes. That's one shining perk of a HEUI fuel injection system. I say put oil in it and crank 'er up. It will be a pig to start and it will take a bit of running to get all the air out before she's smooth again.

Get more opinions on this before you act.

There's a small following for the 6.9 engines, but that C6 will cost a bit to rebuild. If the truck is really beat, sell the engine and scrap the rest. If it's really clean, do the math or sell it as 'clean truck, but needs tranny'.

back it up even more!!!
a 1990 has a mechanical injector pump. and will run with no oil pan on the engine. at least until it spins the bearings and siezes up.

Where are you located? How low on oil did you run it? Did you top it back off and start it? You should ignore those first few replies... a lot of people don't know what an IDI is, but you are among people that do now.

Put the 6.9 long block in your 1990 crew cab... Part out the rest.... the 6.9 and 7.3 NA are almost the same engine. No problem dropping it in as a running replacement if your 7.3 is damaged.

thats exactly what i was gonna say.
the 6.9 and 7.3 are IDENTICAL on the outside, which means a swap will be as simple as an engine swap can be.

FWIW, the c6 is one of the most durable and cheapest to rebuild, so if that truck is good overall, having the tranny rebuilt for 500 bucks or so would be well worth it

unlike the powerstroke boys said, it is very possible to kill a 7.3 by running it out of oil, just like any other engine. usually if you did damage by running out of oil, its obviously knocking or otherwise bad. if its just running rough, its quite possible that the problem is a bad injector or two - and injectors for these cost like 20 bucks a pop, so that could be a really cheap repair if thats where the problem really is.
