Hi guys, I'm working on a 04 6.0 in an ambulance at work and the oil psi gauge reads nothing, even when I gave it a little throttle driving into the building. It also has an extended crank time. When going to replace oil psi switch I seen the wire was rubbed some so I repaired the wire and also replaced the switch. Started engine which still had extended crank and gauge still showed nothing at idle. If I rev it to 1000 rpm it then goes to normal range. My thought is that it must have oil psi if it stays running right? Cause you would need lpo to get hpo correct? I know that it only needs like 7-7.5 psi to operate switch, should I check with mechanical gauge at port that switch goes into? If so what should psi readings be while cranking and at idle?
You are correct that you must have LPO to have HPO and keep the engine running. If you already replaced the sending oil sending unit did you also replace the plug? The gauge is nothing but an idiot light with a needle. It really doesn't show any kind of pressure, only that you have pressure. Also, are you running a factory filter and cap?
Right I know it just shows oil psi or not, its no actually reading. Plug was fine, I just had to repair the wire. I'll have to check on the oil cap when i get to work here in a bit.
From what I can tell they are running factory oil filter cap. Go mechanical gauge into port for oil psi switch. At idle it only showed 5 psi, at 1500 rpm it showed 12 psi. This to me seems low?
Next easiest thing to do would be put in a known to be Factory oil filter (it can be hard to tell on a used one).
Do you do the servicing on this unit, or just repairs? Probably should have started with that and any info on when it started acting up. For example if it was just after an oil change it would tell us the wrong oil filter (too short) is likely in there.

Sounds low at that pressure.
Two things sticking low pressure regulator or a bad low pressure pump
or front cover damage.
After you verify the filter is correct then the next step is to
pull the regulator and clean it and retest. If you have to go into the
pump your going to need some special tools to reinstall the seal for the crank.
There is a third thing but it's rare. Tired bearings.
Don't normally see this vehicle, I work for a Freightliner dealership and this was a service vehicle for a fleet in which we work on there semi's so they brought it to us. Of course I got stuck on it just for the fact that I own a powerstroke haha. Got an oil filter and cap from Ford and it still had the same psi readings. After that the boss said put it back together it's not are territory, they can bring it to Ford. Which I was fine with cause its and old ambulance and man that dang thing is stuffed in there. Thanks for the help guys!
That's what I was thinking. If it is has the '03 engine.
Now, we will never know.
Anybody every put together a "side-by-side" comparison of these issues by model year? I know folks say the '2003 6L is good 'cause it has the better EGR cooler, but then other's mention the Ball in the HPOP - or the plastic blades on the water pump...
Something like this:
|| issue || 2003 || 2004 || 2005 || 2006 || 2007 ||
| ball in HPOP | falls out | fixed || n/a | n/a | n/a |
| EGR cooler | square - strong | round - less strong | round - less strong | round - less strong | round - less strong |
| Water Pump blades | plastic | metal | metal | metal | metal |
At idle with engine at normal temps......LOP 25 psi
At highway speeds (2000rpm)........LOP 60 psi
When cold......I have seen as high as 100 psi
Thanks for the psi readings, I've been trying to find that in a post on here. Called ford yesterday and that a**hole had the nerve to tell me he couldnt give me the info.

I know what ya mean. Sucks to get into something and not figure out the end result. Being a semi truck shop we just don't have the time to get fully involved in it.
