F1 fuel pump

I received the new fuel pump I ordered from Macs for the flathead six in my brothers 50 F1. The old one was working ok, but was seeping gas and appeared old, so I ordered the new one. While considering the install I happen to push the rocker arm on the new pump. Surprised at the lack of resistance on it. So I grabbed the old one and tried it. Not only some resistance but also suction noise from the pump. No suction noise from the new one. I already know that the new one must be non functioning but thought I would get some thought's from some of you with experience with this engine. Joe

Mount the pump in a vise. Place finger over the inlet and work the pump lever. You will feel suction if the pump is working. Place your finger over the outlet and work the lever. You will feel pressure if the pump is working. If you don't have a vise, you can hold the pump in your hand and accomplish the test.

Okie, the new pump I installed on my 226 had considerable resistance and obvious suction noise. I haven't run the engine yet, but I expect that pump to work.
