I was under my truck yesterday chasing a transmission fluid leak , turned out one of the hard lines going into trans was loose , maybe vibrated loose ?
anyways question is I pulled the speedo gear to se what was in ther so i could correct my incorrect speedometer reading . reads 15mph to slow . I expected to see a nylon gear , instead a metal gear like 2.5" long ? is this correct for a 1968 orig 360 automatic ?
transmission is a C6 as it has the odd shaped pan .
Ford goes by the color of the gear at the end of your cable. you will need to change to a different gear to correct your speedo but the gear in the tail shaft is steel.

Color relates to 16 thru 21T nylon speedo DRIVEN gears (end of cable), introduced in 1960, but you won't find colors listed in the 1957/63, 1964/72 & 1973/79 Ford truck catalogs.
I use the 1973/79 Ford car parts catalog to match the 1961/79 truck part number to the color.
But, not all these trucks have nylon DRIVEN gears. Some could also have a fiber gear riveted to the end of a steel shaft, some have iron gears.
The iron and steel/fiber gears have ID numbers stamped on them.
Depending on the application, the DRIVE gear could be steel or nylon. 1973 and later C6: The DRIVE gear is not replaceable, as it's made as part of the output shaft.
DRIVEN: Types 1 - 2 - 3 are nylon, type 5 has the fiber gear and an 01T ID/part number prefix
Type 3 is nylon, C6 introduced in 1966 Passenger Cars (initially with 410/428's), introduced in 1968 F100/350's with 360/390's.
C6 pan sorta looks Utah as it has a big notch in it and has 17 trans pan bolt holes.
Speedo cable and housing assy includes metal end that the gear attaches to (see pic for misc types).
What is the number of teeth your gear has? Parts catalog lists 01T DRIVEN gears for 1968/72 F100's, tooth count could be 18 thru 21.
LMC's applications are CRAP! See the gear on upper right? This is a poor representation of the 01T type, used thru 1979 on misc F100/350's with 3/4 M/T and A/T.
thanks bill
I have the Utah pan so it is a C6 , but the speedo gear part is all wrong and i noticed my tailshaft is short compared to pics of FE c6 i found on line .
I'll crawl under after work and snap some pictures to post .
Speedo cable appears to be "Type C" which is correct for your application. I need to know the tooth count of the gear you have now and if it's a fiber or cast iron gear.
Look closely at the gear, there should be an ID number stamped on it.
