Tire Question

Hello

I just purchased a 06Ranger and I am thinking about changing out the tires. The truck came with some 31x10.5r15LT which are loud and not very smooth when driving around town. I want to get some tires that are a little more friendly for town driving. It looks like the rims are aftermarket and I am not use to off road tires and sizes. Is there a way for me to tell what size tire I need if I wanted to go with a standard tire size such as 225/70r15? The 31x10.5r15 means nothing to me since this is my first truck and I don't know how to convert that to a different tire size.

thanks and sorry for the stupid question.

Welcome to FTE.

31x10.5r15 = 31 inches in diameter, 10.5 inches in cross section, radial, 15 inch rim. All but the rim size are nominal, they vary by tire but are close to the numbers given. LT = light truck, a heavier load range than P or passenger tires.

Tires come in all kinds of sizes. More info here:

Tire Tech Information - Tire Size Guide

They also list the diameters, weights, load etc for any tire they offer. So if you are shopping, you can use their info to help sort out the info on tires.

31-10.50s on a Ranger would not be a terrible choice, but probably not the best. They are wide and heavy and as such are mpg killers.

What size wheels do you have--15s we know, but how wide are they? That info should be cast into the wheel or stamped into it.

If they're 10.5 wide, then I'm guessing the rims are probably 8-inches wide. That's the tire/rim combo I'm running on my F150.

The p-metric equivalent of 31x10.5R15 would be P265/75R15. It does not have the same heavy load rating as the LT tire, but will handle more than your GVWR and ride a lot smoother and quieter.

FWIW, I've found that alignment problems can increase tire noise. Oddly enough, rotating the tires can also quiet them down quite a bit.

Of course, some brands or types of tires are inherently noisy. If you're running mudders, for instance, you can expect a lot of noise because of the chunky tread. The BFG All Terrains I run only get noisy when it's time to rotate them (because I have bad toe-in), otherwise they're pretty quiet.

Joe-

Thanks for the equivalent information and thanks for the welcomes. Nice to find a good forum with some good people. I think I will change out the tires, I have no need for off road tires and I will not be carrying any large loads, more than a run to HD or Lowes. I bought the 06 Ranger to keep the miles off my MazdaSpeed6 and make it a weekend car and always loved the Rangers.
