I just bought an 82 F150 as a daily driver. They guy I bought it from changed the rear gear to a 3.73 and tossed the gear. I want to go back to stock gearing but can't find any info on my original ratio. Truck was painted and all door jam codes erased. I only have a VIN # and the guy wrote down the number on the rear gears when he pulled them - a-d2aw-4210-a1339. Also there are no ID tags on either of my differentials. They were removed. Also I've been trying to research my transmission. I believe it to be an NP 435, but I've read that 1982 didn't have them. It's a 4 speed with a granny gear and reverse is to the right and down. Again no ID tags. Any info would be great.

Welcome to FTE
VIN does not contain any TRANS or AXLE codes within it. 1980 thru today: Listed (printed) separately on Certification Label that is glued to left door face or B pillar.
9" ID tag located under one of the bolts that retains carrier to housing, usually at 5 o'clock. Many of these tags are missing today.
NOTE: Some 1983/87's came with Ford 9" .. some came with Ford 8.8" integral rear axle that has an inspection cover that no 9" has.

NP 435: Shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) is spring loaded, has two notches, is retained to shift tower by two visible pins.
Warner T-18: Shift lever retainer cap (8MTH-7220) threads on/off. Once it's removed, roll pin visible within threads that retains shift lever in place.
1978/83 F100/150 with 300/302 were also available with "weak sister" Ford RUG SR-OD Single Rail 4 speed Overdrive. Shift lever fits into extension housing.
Awesome. Thank you. So my original gear ratio was a 3.0? Also do you know the spline count on the axles? Id like to return it to stock so I can use 4 wheel drive and maybe get some better mileage
Do you know for a fact that the gears are mis-matched?
You can jack up and support the front end, lock the hubs and rotate the front driveshaft. Count the number of revolutions to get one full revolution of the tires. 3.73's are available for the front pumpkin.
Also, you might find a tag on the front diff. Although the gears could be changed inside.
