Wow ouch i thought it would have more power than that when i bought it lol. Anyways I am starting a lawn service so i started looking for a truck and came by this 78 f-150 351m not in too bad condition little rust needs grill and grill assembly hood and hood latch and could also use a truck bed...Anyways I would like to have more hp. This truck will be used for street... I know I need a new carb. (any suggestions) and what would be good upgrades for max power? I don't know much about engines but I am willing to learn and I would really like to fix up this truck.
There are a lot of different things you can do to get more power, It all depends on how much money you want to spend Good starters are dual exhaust with headers, good tune up, etc.
Any suggestions on decent headers? I am looking for the most bang for my bucks lol.....also i've read that another good upgrade is taking the crank from a 400 and putting it in is that worth it?
The 400 crank will not only give you more cubes, it also gives you more piston options. Are you sure its a 351 and not a 400 already? I ask because most f-150's Ive seen had a 400, Ive only seen 351M's in F-100's.
Guess its a 351 then. I havent dealt with the 351, only the 400. I do know the 351 has a unique piston that doesnt give you much compression. Im sure someone here can be of more help than I. I can tell you that as far as truck motors go, dollar for dollar the 400 is the best IMO. The M/400 are good for making lots of bottom end torque for towing and off road. An Edelbrock intake, 4v carb and a healthy cam will bring them to life.
i have a 351M in a '78 F-150 i rebuild the engine top to bottom in it. it is quiet easy it was my first time i had ever done a rebuild and the only mechanical stuff i did before i got the truck was with go-karts, i am only 16 and no my dad, or uncles didn't help me. if you can read and remember were stuff goes its not that hard at all just get a good manual, i used a HP Books "how to rebuild your Ford V-8" make sure its for the 351M engine. my engine has comp cams energizer H266 cam, edelbrock performer intake a 600 holley performance valve job, and thats about it but it has some serious power, and for 152 hp it sounds low but before i rebuilt mine it ran on 7 cylinders and it could still do a big smokey burnout
Yeah I don't really think that number does it justice. Both the 351M/400 motors are real torque monsters. BDS makes a blower for the motor and for around 9 grand you can have a 434 with a blower and be making an easy 500 HP and at least 600 LB/FT. pocketchange right?

What a joke that show has turned into! First they take an uncut classic Bronco and cut it to pieces. They should be drawn and quartered for that alone!
Next they can only spend $3000 so they convince manufacturers to give them 'Freebies' in exchange for promotional consideration. They had over $29K in 'Freebies' in that monstrosity, still spent the $3K they were allowed and that didn't even include the cost of the truck!
Finally they let that goofball Jesse James drive the thing until he completely trashes it then walks away. The whole show made me sick. That's the last episode of 'Goofball Garage' I'll be watching.
