how many shifter positions does your AOD transmission have? 6 or 7?
7 positions P-R-N-OD-D-2-1
or
6 positions P-R-N-OD-*-* what are the last 2 positions?
With the aod, if you manually take off in 1st gear, rev to your shift point, and then go from 1st to D and back to 1st(really quick) it will shift into 2nd gear and hold 2nd until you slow to downshift speed, which is around 15mph. Or if you're slowing down, shift into 1st and it will engine brake in 2nd gear and then downshift to 1st automatically.
I had an aod in my 67 mustang and drag raced it nearly every weekend. Bone stock aod and tq converter from a grand marquis, behind a Dyno proven 400hp. The only thing you need to worry about is slamming on the gas pedal when in overdrive. It will lock into 2nd gear but not completely out of OD and you'll snap an input shaft (or two)
I'd say the aod is as strong as a built c4 as long as you were in D. I was very impressed with the aod. I learned a lot with the 5 that I blew up. LoL
It was a learning experience. I was 18-21 years old when I went through all those transmissions. My pockets were deeper and right foot was heavier.
You play with the line pressure and find the sweet spot, the trans will love it.
Just so you know, I never blew one up on the 1-2 or 2-3 shift. Always blew it up on the 4-2 shift when I didn't take it out of OD manually. When the trans is in D, it is as tough as any other automatic out there. I've flat foot, hammered the throttle while in D, and it downshifts to 2nd gear and screams to 4500rpm and shifts at 6500, and never blew it up.
Always killed them when I was too slow to take it out of OD.
Each trans got almost a full season of drag racing with slicks, and I only blew the aod up on the street...
What I'm saying is, my car was 3700lbs with 400crank hp at the time, and the aod shuffle never killed it. Maybe in a 4700-5000lb truck it can't handle it. But there is a lot you can do to upgrade them for little money.

good to know, i wont be drag racing or have 400 hp. but i do like to put my foot down once in a while. the 2nd gear shifting is more what i was worried about, i want the engine braking because its a truck.
