How to hook up a SunPro voltmeter
Now for the positive side, where does the wire go to...to the ignition fuse or somewhere else?
Could I use 12 gauge wire for both the ground and positive? I think they had 18 gauge wire but I don't have them no more or have any on hand.
Thanks.
Ideally the positive should go to the "line" side of the fuse block. In other words, tap any fuse in the block but use the side that is "hot" when the key is on. The simplest way to verify this is to pull the fuse you want to tap, turn the key on, take a voltage reading between the frame of the truck and each terminal in the empty fuse slot. The one that shows battery voltage is the side you should tap for the volt meter. Once you have tapped that terminal, replace the fuse. (Don't worry, the meter won't overload that circuit because the power to it is not going through that fuse).
A volt meter is the one gauge in the truck that you don't really want protected by a fuse or circuit breaker and there really is no need to do so as long as the wire to the meter feeds ONLY the meter. (So, don't run the positive for the volt meter and then tap that line for some other accessory later on...just feed the meter with it).
