i have a 2001 f-250. it started to stutter and miss the other day. i had the same issue in febuary and hooked up the code reader and got P0302 cylinder #2 misfire. i replaced the coil pack in feburay and now today have the same error code, same cylinder so i replaced it again. this time, when i pulled out the coil pack, it was wet and brownish rust color on the end. it did not smell like fuel at all. i put the new coil in and the problem still exists and i still have the same code. the plugs were all new platnum plugs in febuary of 2012. any idea what i might have going on? any suggestions/ideas? i appreciate the time and help!
Major candidates for the misfire 1-bad coil, 2-bad spark plug, 3-bad #2 injector, 4-electrical wiring issue (both #2 coil & injector wiring ) .
You also have a water issue , is it from rain , car-wash, off-road driving or seeping cooling fluid (bad gasket ) ?
If it were me , I would change the #2 plug anyways , since it got wet ( I would use dielectric silicone grease on plug & coil interface ) . Clear the code and triple-check #2 cylinder wiring, both COP and injector wiring ) . If code comes back , I would swap the #2-coil with another cylinder. Did the code come back on #2 or the code followed the coil ? . If the code followed the coil , I would replace it with ( Motocraft or Standard brands only ). If the code stays at #2 , then I would get a noid light to verify the PCM signal for #2 injector then next step is possibly replacement of #2 injector .
Also , I would try to stop that water problem wherever the source is . Is it off-road riding ? may be , use some home-made splash-guards to protect your engine .
there was no off-road driving or car wash. we did get some heavy rains but that was about 5 days prior to the misfire starting to happen. i already replaced the coil pack on the #2 cylinder right after the misfire started and that didn't fix it. the misfire does seem to be intermitent, i drove it 15 miles on sunday and it didn't happen. i'll have to look at the wiring closely and look into changing the plug.
