2004 F350 super duty 6.0 diesel

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum stuff but I just got my first diesel 2004 f350 superduty supercab short bed 100 thousand miles and I love it but I have a few questions about it.

1) What size fuel tank do I have?
2) What should I look out for with the 6.0?
3) The maintenance that goes with the diesel fun, what is recommended and what can I extend without destroying the truck?
4) The truck had a fifth wheel hitch and was commercially used before I bought it from the dealer what maintainer should I do right off the bat?
5) Also any tips that you guys can give me would be great with fuel saving and anything else possible?
6) Where should I buy parts if I ever need to buy parts? Like what's the best place online or around town? (Monmouth county NJ)

Thank you!

First of all welcome to the dark side , secondly welcome to FTE.

1) What size fuel tank do I have? Around 26 Gallon
2) What should I look out for with the 6.0? Signs of puking coolant around the degas bottle cap, the spread between the ECT and EOT after up to full operating temp and cruising at 65 on level roads for 30 minutes the delta should be no more than 15*
3) The maintenance that goes with the diesel fun, what is recommended and what can I extend without destroying the truck? Oil & oil filter change intervals of no more than 7500 miles ( most on here I believe are going only 5000 miles ) Fuel filter change at no more than 15000 miles, Air filter as needed and indicated by the filter minder, And as a starting point I would ( if you don't know the history of the maintenance schedule ) have the oil, oil filter and fuel filters changed immediately and have your local dealer do a transmission hot flush and change the external filter. Make certain the only filters used are OEM/racor for fuel and oil and OEM for the air filter and make sure the oil filter housing cap is OEM. DO NOT try and go cheap with the maintenance on these trucks as it will cost you BIG down the road, so to answer your question you can not extend any change intervals unless you are shortening them.
4) The truck had a fifth wheel hitch and was commercially used before I bought it from the dealer what maintainer should I do right off the bat? Some of this is in the answer to #3 above plus you may want to have the fluids in the differentials and transfer case changed.
5) Also any tips that you guys can give me would be great with fuel saving and anything else possible? To save fuel keep your foot off of the skinny pedal. And you need gauges that read live data like the scan gauge II or one of the smartphone apps like dashboss for IOS or torque for android so you are not flying blind.
6) Where should I buy parts if I ever need to buy parts? Like what's the best place online or around town? (Monmouth county NJ)
For OEM parts its tough to beat, AutoNation Ford White Bear Lake Parts (previously Tousley Ford Parts)

Use the search function to find answers to most questions. I have a 04 short box and get about 25-28 gal. Long beds are about 38. There is a harpoon mod that can be done to increase the amount of fuel. Hope this helps.

Wow that was awesome answers Mustang thank you so much I will definitely stick to what you said. I also know that the dealer I bought the truck from changed the oil pan due to rust issue and obviously changed the oil and oil filter when they did that. Also how much are the dash monitor gauges your talking about like dashboss cause I have iPhone (love apple haha).

Also so I got this right the things you said to get done are:
-have the transmission fluid flushed and changed with also change of external filter
-differential and transfer case fluids changed

Also should I change the fuel filter since I don't know most of the maintainer records.

Did I miss anything? Or should I do more?

Also edodgsf350 is your 04 stock or do you have anything done to it? And do you have any recommendations?

If you have any questions about dashboss Bullitt390 ( Josh ) is your man he is like a dashboss savant. Make sure you get the transmission HOT flushed, the only place I know for sure that would have one is your local ford dealer. And you have to be certain you are only using OEM filters.

My only recommendations is maintenance, and something to monitor the engine, fuel pressure, and EGT

My 04 is bone stock just what you see in my signature. I plan on doing some exhaust work and oil and get cooler as my deltas are on the border line.
