Alright guys, been on the search for my first powerstroke for a little bit now.
Waiting on the right deal to fall in my lap.
Not sure how the acceptance on this site is with tuning and performance options for these trucks, but i'm just wonder whats the most hp/ftlbs people have seen on this site from their trucks?
A lot of people frown upon tuning diesels and trying to make them "performance trucks" but i'm really infatuated with it, how much progress has been made in such a short amount of time of diesel performance really coming on the scene.
Whenever i find me one i will be wanting to tune it, exhaust intake injectors larger turbo housings and wheels etc etc etc.
What are some good combos of performance parts people have had luck with?
Tuner recommendations?
Or tell me to leave with these kind of topics
Thanks any in advance!
Nothing wrong with performance talk here. The only thing really frowned upon is blatant douche-bag smoking or threads asking how to roll more coal.
Limitations to the 7.3L are the HEUI system. It's a slow injection system compared to many others, so fuel-only numbers are lower on these trucks compared to the Cummins and Dmax big boys out there, and even compared to some the newer Powerstrokes.
There's lots of power combos out there. First you need to establish a power goal that you want to reach, then we can talk parts.
As with any truck, there needs to be a good foundation. When you start talking power, the first thing mentioned is the transmission on these trucks. You will most likely need to sink money in that first, unless you find a truck with a trans that has already been built.
Post up your power goals, and everyone here can make some recommendations for you.
I agree with Pocket. A good tuner/chip really livens up a 7.3, with not to many modifications needing to be done to it. Intake, exhaust, and gauges along with a tuner or chip make a world of difference.
I would say 400-450 horse is agood number for the 7.3. Any more and it starts getting REALLY expensive. With the mods in my sig I'm at aprox 425hp, it cost aprox $5k to get where I'm at. I still need a $5k transmission to be dependable. So figure $10k to be at aprox 400 hp. I drive my to truck 35 miles to work and 35 back every day and it has been verry dependable. Too much more horsepower, and you will start to go past the reliable daily driver .

You have the set-up that I want to get next. A friend of mine told me that 200/30 hybrids are a great injector, along with a 38R, and I'd be good to go. I do have a Transgo Tugger shift kit, but, as you said, with more power, it's only time before the tranny will likely need to be replaced.
I second Crewcab Turbo's assessment. I have the stage II sticks with all the support mods... and the HD4R100 transmission to accept the added acceleration. About $10K in mods, but several more Buck$Zooka rounds were needed to get Stinky up to 100% (like new).
Haaha i like that buckzooka. And yeah i work at a chevy dealership in th truck shop and my buddy has an 06 i think dmax tuned and all, its pretty mean, and they've convinced me that they are pretty solid platforms from what i've seen, but you just pay way too much, he paid 25 for his and he bought it with 98k on it.
Anyways, i'd like to see like crewcab said around 450, with any diesel if you want to go much higher than that you gotta look at the tranny, even my buddys with an allison under it, slips when he turns his tuner up and matts it in 4th and 5th
So those are my numbers, around 450 hp
What are some of the most ran tuners?
I have heard of DP SCT PHP
Just wondering which ones are good and which ones to really stay away from
Changes have taken place in 2013 - with the addition of the Hydra and the Infinity. I have a beta tune that will be exclusively available on the Hydra (when widely released). Stinky will never (and I mean never-ever) be without this tune in his inventory again. I nicknamed it the TNT, but as a beta - it has no official name yet. It would be powerful to have the situational awareness of the Infinity, plus the tune selection of the Hydra.
One thing you need to know is some of these trucks have PMRs and forged rods. If you want 450+ hp you need to get a forged bottom end to ensure reliability for the long term other wise your talking even bigger money
Seems like everyone on PSN is just on the TS bandwagon?
no offense
In all fairness, that thread was 3 years old. Still some good info though. One thing to keep in mind is that many of the popular tuner folks update their tunes. In fact, most of them recommend that you update your tunes every couple years or so. Just think, the 7.3 PSD has been around since 1994, and they are still figuring out better tunes, better aftermarket parts, that can make these engines much more powerful.
