Went out mudding the other night, got to a gas station knowing something wasn't feeling right in my truck felt like it was dragging. Left the gas station to go home and didn't have 1st gear, and 2nd and 3rd gear felt like the trans was slipping(high rpms low speed) truck drives perfectly fine in reverse? and feels normal(for the most part) in 4lo. but in D it takes a lot of pedal to even get it to move which it barely does. any ideas? drained the trans and the fluid was brown with very very very small flake(kinda like pearl in paint) 2nd gear is even worst and 1st is like putting it in neutral, the linkage appears to move fine for every gear change.
truck is a 76 f100 4x4 390 c6
The trans was rebuilt 2 owners ago, friend of a friend. it looks brand new inside the pan..not to say it isn't blown or anything.
Any help, tips or info is greatly appreciated as i don't know a whole lot about transmissions. -Ron
first of all, your first post was at 12:30 this morning. Most of us were sleeping so you should have more than 5 hours of patience before you post again.
Now, with brown, and not red, trans fluid I would suspect that your trans has been overheated and your fluid is shot. This in turn can cause your seals to wear out prematurely and the plates to lose their material and even warp.
Mudding is hard on parts and especially transmissions because you are romping on the gas trying to get a heavy vehicle to go through the slop. Well guess what component takes the abuse? You guessed it, the trans.
So, I would recommend dropping the tranny and take it apart and do a full inspection and be prepared to rebuild it.
Thanks, I can't help but be impatient when I can't figure something out it's just my nature. I guess i'll be pulling it out here soon, what exactly should i be looking for? besides anything clearly broke I don't know that I will be able to spot the problem? Any specific tools needed to rebuild the c6?
If you plan on more mudding then you should get one built up at a shop that knows how to do it . The tranys that came it these trucks were never built for that hard use , c/4 or c/6 . Of course a lot of guys just like to break things so they can brag about how long it took them to do it, if thats the case, then have fun.

Smell the fluid and look for sparkles in it right after driving. As far as the rebuild, if you have impatience in your "toolbox," you should put a "tranny guy" in there too.
Just thought i'd post a little update, pulled the tranny out and like to say that I love these trucks the pan that comes off in the cab makes it perfect to drop the tranny and transfer case with a hoist. Anyways looking at the insides I notice that there is discoloration and possibly scoring underneath the reverse band, also looking at the rear of the transmission I tried turning the shaft coming out, turning it counter clockwise it seemed to turn fairly easily with one hand and turning it clockwise its very hard to turn with both hands, any thoughts?
Should be taking it to a shop tomorrow or the day after.
