Question Coolant on engine 5.4

I lost some coolant onto the garage floor and it appears to be coming from behind the water pump. The engine block is wet with coolant in the area directly
below the intake manifold. I am wondering if this is a water pump problem or something else? Anyone have this problem?

Sounds like it wont be hard to track it down. Fill it back up and run it until it starts leaking again. it sounds like a bad water pump.

Kinda what I was thinking. The man at the Ford parts counter said that it could be the pipe that leads to the heater core as it travels right over the area in question.

If it's wet above the pump then I too would suspect the heater hose as the source of the leak. If however it's wet only below the pump then I'd suspect the leak is with the pump. In the second case you would need a new pump.

What about that pipe that runs under the intake?

Doing a pressure test on the system might help you figure out exactly where the leak is coming from.

Thats what it probably is. Is it a pain to remove the intake?

How many miles in your truck? Water pumps many times will go bad around 150 k. It's a relatively easy changeout and the most common item to fail in the coolant system. Check the weep hole for moisture as what you see is beyond the seal and once the bearing goes bad, the seal isn't far behind.
Bet my money on the w/pump.

No but you do have to take your time and not rush it. Take some pictures for reference in case you wonder what goes where after. Tag where vacuum lines go, and get a set of new spark plugs. The plugs are very easy to change with the intake off and you'll thank yourself later for doing them now.

Wow. Great thought about the plugs. Maybe I'll remove the intake manifold next time I have to replace my plugs. It might save me some time. Lol

I have 104000 miles. Just changed the plugs. I have the Ford dvd, an expired one, from a dealership guy that I know. I have to roll the date back on the laptop to use it, but I was able to print out the steps required for the intake manifold removal and installation. It was very helpful. Today I got as far as one step away from pulling the manifold. Tomorrow I will find out whether or not the pipe or the o-ring at the end is the source of the leak. I doubt it's the water pump because of how the water got all in the valley, unless it got blown back there.

You would need something like a fan in front of the water pump for that to happen...oh wait...yeah!

I don't think that's what happened. The coolant wound up on the garage floor below the rear of the engine. No coolant spray around the water pump and coolant was evident in the engine valley only. My guess is the tube that goes thru the valley. I will continue disassembly and post the results.

It turns out that it was leaking from the joint between the intake manifold and coolant transfer pipe. The area at the joint was cracked and the oring was no longer sealing.

All fixed now. It was the crack in the manifold.

So did you replace the intake? or fix the connection in some manner. Did you get a new pipe?

I have a 2003 with 230k miles and I think this is next

Would you recommend the Dorman intake???
