Is that the hole for the rods that connect between the firewall and the outboard edge of the radiator support cover? Is there another matching hole on the driver's side? It might be an alignment hole used to locate the welded on angle bracket that holds the rod against the firewall. Looks like the bracket has a small stamped hole that would fit in the hole in the firewall. If you don't plan on using the alignment rods, you sure don't need that hole.
Mine has one also...I could be wrong, but I think it is for the vacuum supply hose to the wiper motor. There is a grommet and the hose goes thru the grommet.
This is not what i expected to see when I Googeld Mystery Hole ! ( sorry had to post that thought ) Don't kick my teeth out for being warped LOL ! Sorry , no good info , but the vac line seems good .
All the slant cabs have it but not the 56. Every one I have come across has had a metal plug in it. With all the patching you are doing on that firewall you may as well close it up.

I agree with this answer. That's what it's for on my '53.

Whew, I'm glad someone else took this route and I didn't have to.....LOL
I was going to go with a reference to a girl I knew back in high school or something like that but thank goodness I don't have to go there now....dodged that bullet
