Is that the hole for the rods that connect between the firewall and the outboard edge of the radiator support cover? Is there another matching hole on the driver's side? It might be an alignment hole used to locate the welded on angle bracket that holds the rod against the firewall. Looks like the bracket has a small stamped hole that would fit in the hole in the firewall. If you don't plan on using the alignment rods, you sure don't need that hole.

Mine has one also...I could be wrong, but I think it is for the vacuum supply hose to the wiper motor. There is a grommet and the hose goes thru the grommet.

Weld it shut and you'll find out that you'll need it and what it is for.

no pat, the support rods connected to a gusset plate under the lip of the firewall

vacuum hose access sounds probable.... I'm gonna disappear it...

thanks guys

All the slant cabs have it but not the 56. Every one I have come across has had a metal plug in it. With all the patching you are doing on that firewall you may as well close it up.

I beg to differ with ya on this point. That's one hole I didn't fill and I still don't know what it is for.

I agree with this answer. That's what it's for on my '53.

I was going to go with a reference to a girl I knew back in high school or something like that but thank goodness I don't have to go there now....dodged that bullet
