WOT and Code

Well today I laid into it getting onto the freeway to avoid being run over and when I hit about 22-23 on the boost gauge, my SES came on. I ran the code and it was giving me a 1249, which indicated a Waste Gate Control issue I believe. Not sure what to do, the truck ran like a bat out of hades, but code stayed. I cleared the code and it doesn't come back unless I hit that boost level again. What do I need to look at? I plan on rebuilding the turbo in the near future, what else should I look at repairing/replacing?

It sounds like your wastegate control solenoid has an issue - it's the part on front of the spider with the red and green hoses.

I will look into that. Maybe a hose came loose or something. The red line is plugged into a cac bolt. It will all come apart when the turbo comes out. Do you think that I should replace that solenoid? Truck runs fine even when the code comes up. I mean that old girl will get up and scream down the highway. She didn't even leave much of a screen of smoke, maybe a little puff, but really little at that. She was at 80 when I backed out and was flowing with the traffic, then I looked down and the SES light came on. Same place same situation about two weeks back. Didn't get the code then, but this time I pulled it to see.

Wait... I was under the impression you had to clear a hard code. Does the SES go out on its own after about 90 seconds? If so... that's normal (and honeydew has it) - yet it sounds like your boost gauge is reading a little low. This happens at closer to 27 PSI on most rigs.

That is an overboost code and it is completely normal when you hit that psi. You are getting it because you have the red line plugged and disconnected from the wastegate. This is disabling the wastegate from opening by intake pressure(it will still open at higher boost because exhaust back pressure will force it open).

Plug the red line back into the wastegate and you will not experience it anymore. Or you can leave the line unplugged like it is and just live with the soft code. It does not do any harm.

Yes Chris it is. Not sure, but will look into all of it over the week. Was busy canning beans this evening. What is OCR?

Overboost code regulator

Its just a soft code and shouldnt ever hurt anything.
Its just a feedback out of range response...
The actuator is commanded to kick in at a certain map psi and it actuates, but no boost gets relieved... it thinks there is a problem... but not a major one... no hard code to set mil
Malfunction indicator lamp

You can stick a 4$ harbor freight air pressure regulator between your spider and map with it pre set to like 20 or so... thats about where mine is set... and pulling the camper home up that first little hill i just layed on it and saw dang near 30 with no ses blinks at all...

I will get with you on that Chris. It is something to look into anyway. I want to be able to listen to the boost, which is quite exhilarating in of itself. You need to catch a ride with me when it is running like it did when the SES kicked in Chris. It was just steady go, no slow, just go.

Man... It's like ya gotta be a trial lawyer to get the correct info and give the appropriate response:

I asked if the SES light stayed on, and the answer was "the code stayed". This is not the same thing as the SES light staying on. There are plenty of "soft codes" that will make the SES light up temporarily, and leave a code in there for the next time it's scanned. There are things that light up the SES light and leave it on until the symptom is gone upon subsequent starts. That's a hard code.

The SES light comes on when you sneak up on 27 PSI, then the SES light goes out about 90 seconds after the overboost ceases. This is normal without an OCR on a DP-chipped truck, but there are other scenarios where this can happen.
