whats it take to swap a 302 in a 390 truck?

hey everybody ive got a 2wd with a 390 and t18 and am considering puttin in this 302 with an AOD sort of temporarily to work on the 390 engine.(ill need the truck to move and 390's take a long time with my budget). i know ill need a driveshaft and i can probably handle the trans mount.

what im not sure on is will i have to find different motor mount perches? any other stuff that you think i might forget would be helpful too.

thanks guys

I replaced the 360 in my 73 with a 302. The 360 had a 3 s/pd trany and with the 302 clutch housing it went together easy. I already had the mount stands for the 302 which are a little different that the FE ones. I then just drilled new holes in the 2/wheel drive crossmember for the stands. I had to add a little more spacer to move the fan blade in side the fan shroud a small amount. No drive line problems until i changed it to an AOD, the i just moved the engine ahead one more inch so i would not have to have the drive shaft cut . Lots of room to shift the 302 around to keep from redoing the drive shaft.

P.S. almost for got, by using the F.E. radiator with the 302 on it's mounts i had to lower the radiator a little to get it to center in the fan shroud. If you use the F.E. stands you may not have to do that , i don't know.

Yes. The transmission and driveshaft do not get touched. You have to replace the bell housing with a small block bell housing and clutch fork. If this is temporary, I would suggest drilling new holes in the FE frame stands so you can just dump the FE back in when you're ready to. After that, just use the 302 accessory brackets and hoses on the front and you should be good to go.

that helps a lot guys thanks.

only thing is this 302 has been fully balanced with the AOD flexplate, so i dont really want to put a standard flywheel on it unless i can balance the flywheel itself without redoing everything?

i would rather go this route than this AOD... its pretty weak. at that all ill have to start looking for is the 302 bellhousing and fork and clutch/flywheel.

cant i buy an aftermarket for the 302, like from lakewood or some other race bellhousing company, and that will mate it up to my t18?

now im getting excited

If you find a truck with a 300 six or the 302 in it, you can use the flywheel, clutch fork and bell housing. The flexplate and flywheel should be an internal, zero balance. Meaning the rotating assembly is balanced without the fly wheel. Then the flywheel is balanced. Then the two parts are bolted together. So, ...no worries there.

i use electric fans so i may just have to make a custom radiator hose.

cool, i thought that the 300 and small blocks were the same but wasnt sure, that will help me find stuff for it. hell, now that i think about it i have access to a 300 motor, my buddy's old block, but his were auto's so no parts there.
