the manufacturer installed the cabin air filter in very few Escapes- maybe none
open your hood- prop it up high with a board or a broom
on the right side- passenger side- you'll see what looks like screws along the cowl- they aren't screws in the normal scense- you lift up on the Phillips part and it frees the cowl to be separated
pry it up and work loose the metal looking cover
you'll see an opening-
O'Reilly's can order the cabin air filter
** make sure they don't order the one for the Hybrid- it's totally different

you'll definitely notice a difference in the air coming in when you turn on your heat or AC-
you should be out here in the "Dust Bowl Country" I was surprised both my Escapes had none- and yet- 3 miles on sand/dust road I can tell the difference with the cabin air filter in
I find that if you drive with windows open a lot or on a gravel rd. the cabin filter isn't worth it but that is just me. If you don't go with one clean/dust the area just cause.

Seems to me if you even drive with the windows down anywhere it isn't worth it.
OK so I took out 8 or 10 plastic screws, pried up the cowl under the wipers and I find a cavity that looks like it could hold a cabin air filter but it is empty. Did previous owner remove it? Did Ford ever install one? Should I bother spending $30 on a new one?
Whats the worse that could hapen if I just close it up & forget about it???

you didn't look at my picture- they aren't screws- you don't need to get all worked up- 2 or 3 at most- you can pull them with your fingers- you see something - ever occur to you to read the words here
