Hey guys, got a couple of questions for you. I've come across a 429 Super Cobra jet engine,it's a DOVE-A block w/DOVE heads,1 fly cut,429 super cobra flat pistons, bored 30 over,460 crank rods. How rare is this and how good of engine is it,what HP should it get? I just put in a SBC 383,also have a LS1 I'm holding to put in. What I'm trying to do is justify buying this if it's a really good or rare engine and selling the other two. I'm so confused ,L8R ZFLASH
It kind of sounds like it's not an original Super Cobra Jet engine. From what I know of these engines it needs to be DOOE-R heads not Dove which were your standard car heads. Also would be no reason to use 460 rods over the original 429 ones. Looks like a standard rebuild that became a super cobra jet engine on sale day.
I'm not big on factory headed engines as even standard basic aftermarket heads are a vast improvement.
I 'm not an expert on the BBF. Sounds to me like the 429 block was used along with a 460 crank making it at least a 460 0.030" over. The rods are the giveaway. I think the rods are from a 460 engine - that would be a longer rod with a short piston pin to top of piston length. The longer rod / short piston in theory allows the piston to "dwell" longer at the top of stroke giving an advantage to the combustion time. (I know it is not "much" time but it is longer none the less.). If the crank is offset ground it may be many more cubic inches.
The only reason I know any of that stuff is a just got the same block and a C6. Thinking about building a 514 CU/IN monster for my 50. I will not be looking for high horsepower but rather high torque for a different slant on fuel economy. (what I told my Wife)
When you have a 429 block, cut .030 over with a 460 crank you get a 466 which is exactly what I have in my Mustang. The Dove heads are good heads but you still have to spend the money to port them to make some real HP and they are very heavy. By the time you spend the money to get them done you are close to the cost of set of brand spanking new alu heads that will make as much if not more hp and be a lot lighter. If you go with alu heads and intake you will drop about 70 lbs. which makes it close to the weight of a 351 Clevland.
My engine has a Comp Cam 280H it makes about 400+ HP and is a torque monster. I have it tied to a C6 with a slippery converter. It makes a great street, cruiser engine. It will pass everything but a gas station, I can't go far before I have to feed it.
Thanks to all for the answers, sorry I'm late, just got off work. Since it's not that rare,I'm just going to keep what I have for now. Later I'll bore out the LS1 and add a set of 243 heads to it and maybe, maybe, supercharge or twin turbo. That's waaaaaaaaaaay down the road,L8R ZFLASH
