Hello i am new to this i know i will get alot of Boo`s for saying this i do have a 96 ram 1500 but i am looking into getting a 2001 F250 EXT cab
8 foot bet, 4x4, meyer plow, 4 door, V-10, automatic with 147,076 miles
the price that the dealer is asking is 5,995.00 i am not sure if this would be a good truck to use from towing a boat to light to mod plowing please let me know is this might be a good deal thank you..
The V10 is a very nice power plant! That truck will have no problems towing or plowing! Make sure the driveline is in good shape, plows are hard on front ends as well. What kind of shape is the body in?
i have not gone to see the truck yet just been looking at it from the dealer sit i will post the link but from the pictures the body is in very good shape andalso is the inside..
Is 2001 before the spark plug issue? Some older Fords had spark plugs that were a PITA to change. I know it is fixed now, but don't recall the first year that had the issue.
Let me get this out of my system. Booooo to the Dodge LOL just kidding.
That truck looks nice but give it a good look over though. I just always noticed trucks with plows always seem to have more going on with them. Usually the ones I have seen were definitely a company truck. Used and abused. I would do a good once over the bottom side of that truck. Check for any underlying issues like rotted out parts or failing components.
My neighbor had a 2004 Ram 2500 and the truck always seemed to be beat after each season he used it for plow work. He would spend 1,000s on the repairs. When it got repoed, he lost everything he had on the truck except for the plow which now sits in his driveway. When I got my truck, he offered the plow to me and I politely refused.
If it were me, I would look for something similar but in a crew cab. Extended cabs are nice but after awhile you will wish you had more room plus if you want to more people around more comfortably. This is especially true if you plan on keeping the truck for a few years or more. If your budget allows, think about finding a 2005-07 since they will have the 5R110 Trans the V10 3v valve. Tons of power. I was looking for that drive train until I found my current 2011 250 CCSB. V10s in general just seem to have excellent power for towing or whatever you were going to do.
Good luck with your truck search. I hope you find one you like, in your price range, and meets your needs.
the truck itself is set up for work, but like others posted check it over really good. The '01 V10's did have the sparkplug blow out issues, but it wouldn't be a deal killer for me, just change the plugs and make sure they're torqued to spec. One thing I noticed is that the fender flares look a lot newer than the rest of the other plastic trim, that is a big red flag to me that the wheel wells are rusted out and they are using the flares to hind the rust. I have a friend who works at a Ford dealership and that is one of the tricks they use to hide rust. Also the tailgate is from a donor, and if the dealership can't even spend a little money to get it painted to match what else did they skimp on it terms of repairs.
I myself would shy away from a truck with that many miles that had a plow on it, plow trucks are usually beat on pretty hard and even though 147,000 miles isn't a lot for normal use, it's a lot for a plow truck. More than likely the front end will need to be rebuilt and I bet the underside of the body is rustier than the titanic.
The truck has rust issues.
I bet the bed and maybe the cab corners.
Look under the bed and look at the bed cross rails.
They fender flares are hiding major rot must likely.
if i can`t find one that has the v10 what other modle of ford would be best right now i have around 6k to spend i can get a plow ford a ford f150 an up for about 1k i have seen the issues with the chevy IFS and with the dodge the tranny would need to be rebuilt along with plowing i will be pulling a 18' boat some one let me know what modle of ford might be good.. thanks
Welcome to FTE Lonlyknight. Just some general tips on buying a used vehicle ... this from a guy who has been "lucky" in buying used and keeping vehicles for a long time (both time-wise and mileage-wise).
If you have the time ... be patient and don't get too caught up in the excitement of the hunt. There are always well maintained, low mileage vehicles coming up for sale at the right price. If you happen to miss one, don't panic ... they made thousands of trucks and there will always be another one coming up for sale.
I bought my '01 (in my signature) after looking for 14 months. I was very particular about the options, mileage and overall condition. After looking and researching for that long, I knew exactly what the market value should be. BTW - I was still able to negotiate 10% off the market value because all used vehicles will need something and I found a few things that needed attention and the seller (used car lot operator) agreed.
Ask a lot of questions before you even go see it (I have a two page telephone questionairre I use). See if you can determine the ownership history and obtain the maintenance reocrds (if available.
I find that knowing more about the used vehicles I'm interested in buying (espcially known issues or potential trouble areas) than the owner/dealer selling them gives you a lot of credibility and negotiating leverage when transacting a deal.
Again, if you have the luxury of time on your side, be patient. A good truck at he right price will come up ... all the best in your search Lonlyknight! ~ Bugjr ~
The spark plugs are not an issue if done correctly, it's pretty easy. The truck looks kinda beat up and looks to have major hidden rust issues under the fender flares. Once the rust sets in like that it won't be long until the rest of the truck follows. My friend has an 02 F250 XLT 7.3 diesel that has 100,000 miles on it, all plowing or towing. It's been through 3 transmissions and 2 oil pans. The rust on the door bottoms is bad, the bed is pretty rotted and the cab corners are gone. Plowing is very hard on trucks, that being said go for a southern truck with no rust!
well i have been doing some searching and have found an 03 ford f250 sd 4x4 ex-cab with the 5.4l v8 has 230,000. miles the guy just got a meyers 7.6 poly plow last year for the truck also he says there is a miss or a miss fire he looked at the coils and that was as fare as he went i am hoping that wouldnt be a deal breaker for me he still pushed snow with the miss last yr.He is wanting about 5k for it i looked at all the pic he sent me the only thing i am seeing is a dent in the lower drivers rear door. i was told not to get a meyers plow for the have issues at times and also i am not sure if this would be a good truck? i am also planing on useing it to pull a lawncare buss, any opions? i can get a western plow right now complete for around 600.00
Extended cab + 8 foot bed is nice for towing, and plowing in a straight line. But they need a lot of room to maneuver. Driveways with geometry and small parking lots will drive you crazy.
