So I had my EGR deleted, oil cooler, and a coolant filter. Runs like a SOB now but one thing I noticed is my turbo doesn't do the sweep anymore. I have a 4 inch turbo back so whenever it does do it it's definitely noticeable, sounds like a dodge almost haha. Before the delete pretty much anytime the truck was cold it would sweep within 5 seconds of starting up, and periodically throughout warmup. Now it doesn't do it all, havnt heard it once. Is my turbo squeaky clean now or what? Before my intake was filled to the top with soot, but it's very clean now. Any ideas? Thanks.
Unplugging the EGR valve electrically on some early strategies (VXAP1/VXAP2) will cause you to loose the vane sweep. To correct this, plug in the EGR valve electrically and tie the valve to the side, or put the valve back in stock location and plug in electrically.
The EGR valve isn't plugged in, nor do I have it. What are the chances of it having an earlier flash on it, being the truck is a 2005? I don't really know anything about the different flashes or when they were introduced. I know on some flashes if the EGR valve is removed the cooling fan won't work, but mine has kicked on a time or two since the repairs so I assume that's good.
The VXAP1 and VXAP2 strategies are the 03 PCM/motor. If you have a 05 PCM/motor, then Your strategy will start with VXC.
Just because you hear the fan turn on, doesn't mean it can reach full RPM with the EGR valve unplugged.
Here is the requirements for the Vane Sweep.
The PCM commands the variable geometry turbo actuator duty cycle from 15% to 85% in a step pattern to help the turbo vanes achieve full movement. Vane sweep occurs when the following conditions are present:
The vehicle is stopped.
The EGR is commanded off.
The engine speed is less than 1,160 RPM.
The engine oil temperature is greater than a calibrated value.
Vane sweep repeats approximately every hour if the previous conditions still exist. Vane sweep may occur during scan tool commanded test functions.
Noticed it says "EGR Commanded Off", if its not plugged in, the PCM can't see that it's off.
Okay so sounds like I need to get another EGR valve and plug it in. So how are these guys that have the EGR valve unplugged but "turned off" with a tune getting by?
Also is fan speed and RPM something that can be monitored with an Edge Insight CTS? Next thing for the truck will be the Edge, with fuel pressure, pyro and transmission temp on the A-pillar.

First question: They either don't realize that they lost the vane sweep, or they just don't care. Just like the fan functions, when EGR valve is unplugged, the fan will work, but won't reach full RPM. They probably don't have the means to command or monitor the fan RPM in order to see if the fan is reaching full RPM.
Your the first that i know of to noticed the vane sweep lost on a 05 from unplugging the EGR valve. It may not be that, it might be that the above parameters weren't met in order for the PCM to command vane sweep.
I'm not sure about the Edge, I run the DashBoss and can read Fan RPM and Fan Cycle Duty %.
Great info, Rich -- I thought the vane sweep was a relatively new strategy to keep the vanes from sticking. Maybe my sense of "relatively" is dated...
Would this be the flash that throws the wrench light when ECT/EOT deltas are >15 deg or was it in there earlier?
Thanks...
The vane sweep is on the newer flashes. For the 03-early04's, it's the VXAP1 and VXAP2. I can't recall when/what the late 04-07's started using the vane sweep.
Again, I don't know about the ECT/EOT delta for wrench light and vane sweep. I do know the ECT/EOT delta wrench light was only offered on the 05-07 strategies (VXC).
I've got the EGR on the intake and plugged in but "turned off" with the SCT Tuner. The vane sweep is pretty common, I hear it at least a couple times driving the truck on a normal routine.
Maybe I'm thinking of something different, who knows. I mean whatever it did before the whole note of the exhaust would change to a deep rumble without any turbo whistle. I just don't know how someone could miss that haha. But anyways I'm not sure what happened to the EGR valve. Maybe I should give em a call and ask for it back? Haha.
