I have a '86 F260 (Type/GVW/MODEL code F260 =F2504WD) that im parting out. It has a Dana 60 rear end. I was thinking on replacing the Dana 60 on my '65 F250 4WD with the more modern unit.
Im unsure the gears in both rear ends, the tag in unreadable on the '86 and missing on the '65.
My reasoning is use the '86 rear end because changing the brakes doesn't require removing the axle to take the drum off, (that is what I was told). You have been misinformed.
what would be the pro/cons on this swap? is it worth the time and money to do it?
Please, when asking questions, list all the pertinent info.
AXLE code stamped on the Warranty Plate (1961/79). 1963/79: Riveted on the left door face below the latch. Post what the code is.
1965 F250 most likely will be either 3.73-1 or 4.10-1 as 3.54-1 wasn't available until 1966. 4.56-1 & 4.88-1 somewhat rare.
AXLE code printed on the Certification Label (1980 to date) that is glued on.
1986 F250 4WD could have a Dana 60 or Dana 61 or Sterling 10.25.
1961/72 F100/350, 1973/77 F250 4WD (High Boys), 1973/79 F350: Cab & Chassis, Crew Cabs and Regular Cabs on the 140" wheelbase have 33 1/2" inner rear frame rails behind the cab.
ALL other 1973 and later F100/350's have 37 1/2" inner rear frame rails behind the cab. So, you cannot swap rear axles without changing the spring hangers and shock mounts.
There are other factors to consider, the difference in driveshaft lengths due to different wheelbases, different companion flanges.

I just got back from a one week cruise to Alaska. Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway. Not too bad. Where did you start from? Cali? Two weeks sounds brutal.
Holland America M/V Zuiderdam: Vancouver-Juneau-Skagway. WP&YRR Skagway to Fraser BC, then motorcoach to Whitehorse-Dawson City-Tok-Fairbanks. AKRR Fairbanks to Denali, then Anchorage.
Sure. I saw the Zuiderdam parked with us at Juneau and Skagway. I was on the Celebrity Solstice. We got up to the end of the Tracy Arm Fjord and got a good view of a glacier there. Cool stuff. Actually cold stuff. Dang, if I'd known I'd have tried to contact you. This was the Zuiderdam in Juneau, I believe. Although there were two Holland ships there at the same time so this might be the other one.
Juneau May 20th: Pictured Holland American ship was already there, abaft (to the far right-out of pic) was a Princess ship. Zuiderdam sailed in at about 1:30 PM, berthed at faaar right (way out of pic).
Celebrity arrived just after Zuiderdam, watched as guests were tendered to dock.
9/2006: Took a repositioning AK cruise on the Celebrity "Summit" / Vancouver-Ketchikan-Juneau-Skagway-Icy Point Strait-Hubbard Glacier-Sitka-Victoria-Seattle-San Francisco-Catalina Island-Los Angeles.
That's right. Zuiderdam was to our stern. And the Princess Star or somesuch was between the two Holland ships. Those tenders were a bit of a wait, but not too bad. Here's a shot of all four looking outward from town. You can see the tenders next to the Celebrity and one halfway between the ship and the dock. Our whale watching tour was cancelled due to high waves so we just wandered around Juneau. Not a lot of excitement there.
You will have to change the location of the spring perches.
The later rear end should be wider and be closer to the width of the front end on your 66.
No more often than you will have to service the brakes pulling the axles is not a big deal.
I had a 65 F-250 a 88 F-350 a 95 F-350 and now a 66 F-250 and I had to pull the axles on all of them to service the brakes.
