Just wanted to introduce myself with a quick post and say that I've already learned a lot from searching various topics on the FTE website.
I sold my 1991 Quigley XLT 4x4 a few years ago and have regretted not having it, but I actually don't miss the 10-12 mpg.
So I taken another route, and nice one owner 1987 E150 XL in Seattle and drove it home to San Diego. It's a short wheel base model (124") with windows (XL) and the 4.9 liter six with FI, a manual 3-speed + OD (RTS) transmission, and 3.55 LSD differential.
I started with some period correct wheels, and I also have a project list that I talked to AutoFab about last week: A M5R2 Mazda 5 speed conversion, 3-4" lift, and a 4.11 or 4.55 LSD (depending on tire size). It'll take a while, but a conservative pre-runner will hopefully be the end result. Here's a few pictures...

Maybe not quite this radical, but...
Nice, When i use to race with conejo off road. We had a couple of team members that had pre-runner vans. 6" lift's with 33's. roof rack with 4 8" Pro-comps mounted on front of the rack and two 6 inch square flood lights on the sides. kept the extra parts and tires on the rack in parts box's. built a custom ladder on the rear door to get on roof. per-runner lighted front and rear bumpers.. These were great for chase trucks. you could put most of the stuff on the roof and still have plenty of room in the van for other stuff or sleeping. sandy cone built the rear ends with lockers. one was a 4x4 and the other was 2WD. I know you can make that van a clean looking pre-runner and also appealing for street use .
Sand Fiend, thanks for sharing some great ideas about lights, rack, bumpers, etc. It'll be a project over the next year or so, but I'm with you on being a versatile camping vehicle.
