Engine Removal

I have a 1976 Ford F-100 4x4 with a 360, NP435, and Dana 21 transfer case.

I am replacing the motor with a freshly rebuilt ford 428. I am wondering what the easiest way to remove the motor and install the new one will be. Should I yank both the motor and tranny? Should I unbolt the bell housing from the motor and just pull the motor? Unbolt the tranny from the bell housing?

I am also going to be replacing the clutch in the process of putting the 428 in. Any help guiding me to the easiest way to remove and install the motor would be great.

Thanks, Jay.

just pull the motor. leave the bellhousing on the transmission. pull the hood off and pull the radiator so you have room and don't damage it. I can pull a motor on these trucks and have the hood back on 2 hours after driving it in. I had one ready to lift out of a Lincoln in 2 hours in a junkyard with hand tools.

I'm planning on pulling my motor as well, for a "refresh" The only thing I don't plan on pulling is the heads...

The motor runs great, just leaks oil.

I can't get the motor to separate from the bell housing. All of the bolts are out. Is there something I am missing?

Any help is much appreciated.

Starter off? The motor needs to stay dead level for an inch or so to get away from the input shaft. You could try unbolting the pressure plate.

Also, I have always found it easier (if you have the room) to slide the pressure plate and disc on the input shaft first, stab the pilot bushing, and then attach the pressure plate. You don't have to worry about stabbing clutch splines that way.
