Do any of you guys run a steering stabilizer on a F250 2wd?
I towed my camper over the weekend and on the 6 lane interstate driving 60 mph, with a heavy crosswind and folks buzzing by me doing 80 my truck wanted to wander a time or two. I have a redhead rebuilt pwr steering box, all new busing, drag link & tie rod end. King pins are in good shape and greased. I've had a few 4x4s in the past and with tall tires the steering stabilizer was a must. My current 70 F250 has 31" tall load rated radials.
My camper is only 18' and weighs 3000 lbs.
I just wondered if a steering stabilizer would help any?
It might help but that would be a bandaid on the problem. Sometimes 31's kinda grab ruts in the road when tread starting to get low. Depending on how the tread is patterned. If tread wear dictates I'd try rotating backs to the front and try that.
Check your radius arm bushings to see if they are shot. They could be a cause of your death wobble, also. They do get forgotten about just like straight axle 4wd Bronco's and F-100/150's.
Anthony, Your 250 shouldn't know a 3,000 lb trailer is behind it. The crosswind can be a huge factor. I would like to know the tire pressure in all tires. That when towing can make a difference. Driving a road like I-95 that is all washed out can be a bugger too.
I'm running 70 psi in the tires. The radius arm bushings are not new but don't appear to be worn out, they have been changed about 4 years ago. I had all the drag link work done by a good shop, they thought bushings & king pins looked good, they had permission to replace if need be. They aligned the front end while it was there. I towed the same camper with our Expedition and get pushed around some by winds on occasion so maybe what I'm feeling is normal. I just expected the F250 to handle it better, but I am pulling a giant kite on wheels.
drove the truck on the highway more and still have some wobble depending on the road conditions & winds. I've replace steering box, drag link, tie rod, new tires so I think I'll change the radius arm bushing next.
Should I go polyurethane from energy suspension or the improved plastic moog bushing? I called moog and they recommended the polyurethane. That was suprising.
The wind really bothered me until I installed sway bars on my '68 CS. I was carrying a 9' slide-in camper at the time, the early '70s. It was the best thing I ever did on the truck.
