The manual says .034, .035 is easier to read on the AZ gauge.
With a hot electronic ignition I go .040; I also prefer NGK AP5FS to the Champion F14Y in any Y Block; they seem to be more consistent and long lasting.

I'll repeat myself and add a bit.
The various Motors and Ford manuals say .034, a few say .034-.037. Nowhere is .030 listed altho it might be necessary in a hard starting, high miler.

This is for all sizes of 239-312 type Y blocks.

I guess it depends on which manual you are looking at .
It says right in my original 1959 Ford Truck Operators Manual......
"The gap should be 0.028-0.032 inches wide".

Is the gap different by year perhaps?

gap for plugs on 292????

Thanks everyone for the the replies!

As to the differences of gapping between the years, could it be that the earlier 292's were more performance oriented and gradually downgraded towards 64, hence the change in gap specs????

I dont have any Ford factory truck info past 57. However 54-56 car manuals all say as I already stated.
Motors says .034 on ALL Y Blocks.

In any event .035 is a good all around gap as long as the 6V cables & grounds are OK and the starter is not all gummed up.
On 12V the old Y turns a lot faster even with a 12V starter.
The wider gaps will give a bit more power which is why I go to .040 with electronic ignitions, including old style CD.
