I have a 96 f150, 4.9, 310,000m's. I had major brake failure the other day. Brakes completely failed while driving. Almost wrecked. I think I have it narrowed down to the brake booster and master cylinder, if its the problem. Arrived at a safe place to stop and turned off the truck to see if restarting might reset any issue I was having, maybe computer or electrical malfunction. Tried to restart and rararararararar. A couple or three tries and I smell flooding.
I then tried a few hours later and it starts. I gave it a few min and turned it off again to restart and nothing.
Could it have anything to do with the vacuum in the brake booster?
I just bought it and drove it maybe 3 times in 4 days. Brake lines are in bad shape so I'm going to replace all of them as well as those other two parts, for piece of mind. Hopefully that solves my brake problem.
The brakes ain't electronic, except for the RABS (rear anti-skid) modulator valve is controlled by the RABS module. Don't see how an electronics failure could leave the brakes inoperable. Even if the RABS valve somehow jammed and dumped all your rear brake pressure, the front brakes would still work. I'd say you have 2 separate issues.
Yeah that's correct, the brake booster could be leaking vaccum. I don't know if it would be enough of an unmetered air leak to make the engine not start though... I'd fix the brakes before I worried about getting it to move under it's own power again.
Thanks. That is the plan right now. The rear passenger drum is covered in brake fluid and grime. I suspect a leak and probably a faulty line. I'm going to change them all since I'll be under there.
Also, it didn't sound correct about the vacuum and starting, just thought I should throw it out there. I'm a novice home fixer with a Haynes so I'll take any help I can get. Lets see how it goes this weekend.
Any ideas on better-than-factory brake lines or plan of action?
