[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Jul-02 AT 02:17 PM (EST)]I have read that the timing is 10 degrees BTDC with the timing spout removed. What/where is this? Is it a wire that goes to the coil or distributor?? Which one??? The last time I set the timing on a car, it was with a vacuum advance and points that I set with a dwell meter. I know I'm old, thank you.
Anything wrong with 11 or 12 degrees if it doesn't knock?
Check near the distributor...its essentially just a plug to jumper the wires together...When you remove the plug, the computer will stop adjusting timing and allow you to set base timing...
Hard to describe, but it shoud be a small black connector plugged into a harness around there....(if you have distributor mounted control module, my spout comes out of that same harness...)
On my 1994 5.8L it is just underneath the EEC-IV test plug on the inside of the drivers side fender. It is a wire harness with a black or grey plastic plug(kinda square shaped) snapped into it. Remove this plug to check the timing. That much timing is no problem if it doesn't knock - if it does I would try using a gasoline with more octane before turning the timing back down (just my 2 cents worth).
