l am having trouble installing a Kenwood KDC-248U unit in my 1986 Class C ford motorhome....lt had an cassette ( auto-reverse)in it . The balance never was right in it since l got the unit. Anyway,l get a " protect" on the new Kenwood everytime l try to attach the speaker wires. Older FOrds usually had one ground , is that what could be causing my new deck to go into "protect"?
Yes. Read the instructions with the new stereo, most of the high power ones cannot have a common ground on the speakers. You will probably need to just abandon the old speaker wiring and run new.
To get the higher power from a 12v supply, the newer radios "pull" on the negative speaker wire at the same time they "push" on the + speaker wire. That's a primitive way of describing it, but is basically how they work and why you can't use a common ground. We can cross our fingers and hope the new stereo did indeed "protect" itself and didn't burn anything up inside.
