Dieselsite is selling aux fuel/water separators for the 6.7L and I'd like to entertain the idea of making my own for the 6.4L. The filtration unit from Baldwin is actually very inexpensive. My hiccup is the fuel line connections. Anyone know the specific type of connectors to make this work? Also, what's the fuel flow rating needed? Is 80GPH enough?
You have to be very careful with additional fuel filtration options on the 6.4 and probably any of the common rail diesels. The low pressure fuel pump is essentially a charge pump for the high pressure fuel pump (like many hydraulic systems) and any extra restriction in the system can lead to starvation / cavitation of the HPFP and damage. With the HPFP running to much higher pressures than a typical hydraulic system this is a significant concern. Some reports conclude that the stock low pressure pump is marginal to begin with.
If it was me, I would just do an AirDog. The Cat filter I swapped on it has a 2 micron absolute filter. It's absolute rating is 99.8% down at 2 microns. That is awesome for 26k psi fuel systems like ours.
