Getting ready to do a coolant flush and have been trying to figure out what coolant to use. I have looked online, gone to the parts stores locally and even called the local IH dealer! I will start a thread on the local IH dealer here in town. It is a gem!
The only place that I found any help was the local NAPA and the had the coolant and T-stat in stock. They only had one coolant and that was Zerex G-05.
So is the Zerex G-05 acceptable to use? Is it better then the Ford Gold?
Also do I need to replace the thermostat housing to? The T-stat comes with a new housing.
If you still have your EGR system i would get the zerex or CAT ELC. But if you deleted your egr i would use whats supposed to be in the truck.. ford gold
I'm running Delo ELC (red) and seems to work well. I just changed over from the ford gold, mainly because I will replace mine every year and I do not want to do the PH test that ford gold requires.
Just so you know the Zerex G05 is a HOAT. It contains a SMALL amount of silicates, and isn't significantly different from Ford Gold. I decided to use the CAT brand coolant but to be honest I don't think the Gold is a big problem.
Zerex does sell Zerex® Extended Life Antifreeze / Coolant. It says in the product description on the main page that it is a HOAT and says it is "silicate free" but if you follow the link to the technical bulletin here http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/zerex_extended_life.pdf it's described as an OAT and states it meets Cat EC-1 standards (along with a bunch of others). Sounds like good stuff to me if you want to avoid the silicates.
