Does anyone happen to know distance between the head and the piston at the bottom of the down stroke?
I am about to enter the rite of passage known as Time-Sert spark plug repair and it says that the piston needs to be away from the head while boring it. Rather than removing the cover/head I was going to stick a dowel down the hole the check the piston position.
Is there an easier way?
Once I get through the Time-Sert ritual, I know I'll be a man (he says as a tear wells up in his eye).
You shouldn't be going so far/deep as to hit the piston. Making sure it's down/away from the head is just a safety margin to prevent an "oops" and keep errors from occurring.
Pull your fuse for the fuel pump and put your finger over the spark plug hole and then have someone bump the starter. When you feel suction on your finger the piston is moving down and you'll have your clearance.
