7 pin trailer wiring question...

I've got a 05 6.0 and I'm building a trailer with a winch to lift and lower the ramp for a handicapped buddy he's got a 6.4. I assume the trailer wiring is the same... My question is what's the max amp draw on the 12 volt pin in the trailer wiring? Would it be able to run the winch or would I need a on board trailer battery?

I'm not sure of the wire size, but I think it is about a #10. I know it is larger than the lighting wires. But what you really need to do is check the fuse rating, which you will find in your owners manual. That is your current limit.

I suppose it is probably a small winch motor for a ramp. How much current does it draw?

It's a small atv winch. The manual says it draws 10 amps just to turn the drum, not pulling anything. So what it'll be pulling, maybe 50lbs the max it'll ever see, I'm guessing 30 amps..

The 12v wire is supposed to charge trailer breakaway battery. I think theres a 5 or 10a fuse. My 12v atv winch has 40a breaker. I would think you would need a battery on trl, and batt would charge as veh is driven.

^^^^^ Got it right
You should add a battery and use the 12V line to charge it. Then you can
run the winch from the battery and it will recharge as you drive. Otherwise
your going to need to run heavy cable from the battery to the trailer to get
the heavy current that you will need. A winch will use the most current as
it starts up. You really need to look at the specs for the winch to know for sure.
The 7 pin is a standard so you should have no problems. Key word Should
You need to verify.
