Hey fellas...flushing the coolant tonight and got everything filled up and hoses re-connected annnd dropped one of the thermostat bolts into the valley. I can see it but can't reach it or jar it loose. It's got a 10 mm hex head and is probably an inch or so long. Anyone know if I can limp up to the local auto parts store or home depot to pick one up? Or do I have to go to Ford? I guess I could also go buy a long thin magnet and try to fish it out. With one bolt in, it at least idles without a leak, but I want to take care of this tomorrow morning.
Best $5 you'll ever spend. You can get them just about anywhere, Home Depot has the cheap ones, and you can go crazy and get ones that flex, bend, swivel, the whole 9 yards.
I have found that sometimes the magnet pickup tools have ahead that
is too large to fit. What I do in that case is take some welding filler rod
and tape a small rare earth magnet on the end and snake that in.
I got a set of 4-prong parts reachers for Christmas 2 years ago. I have about worn them OUT working on my Ex. Dropped the o-ring to the fuel line down and used this to pick it out of from down in the valley. Not sure how I lasted so long without these.
I think mine are from Craftsman, but can't find much on the web except this picture...
Great ideas guys, I will definitely have to invest in a snake magnet or one of those picker uppers Misky. So this morning I straightened out a wire coat hanger and jarred it loose hoping it'd fall through and of course it got caught again somewhere else. Completely demoralized I drove up to Home depot to try and find a bolt. No luck. Tried Autozone and Advance. They have the M8 x 30 mm (which is what Ford calls it) but the thread size is off. Drive home ready to order one and decide to just walk out and look around the driveway and the street since there's a steep lip where the driveway meets the street.
Sure enough, there's the damn bolt sitting in the street. Day just turned around 180.
I hate when bolts spout legs, I was going to say a camera scope so you knew where the bolt was and then a mag or pinchers.are you 100% sure you got the right bolt

When you are getting Metric bolts you need 3 data points you only have 2.
8mm size x 30 mm long but you don't have the thread pitch in mm
So what your looking for is M8 x p.p x 30 mm. Where p can = 1.25 or 1.00
the 1.25 is the common and the 1.00 is fine.
Nice that you found it. You can keep the thread info for later use.

Sean
Yea Sean I actually got the 1.0 and 1.25 but the problem is ford doesn't say which and the oem tstat bolt tapers off at the bottom so I think that's why at least I wasn't able to get either the m8-1.0 or m8-1.25 generics to fit.
I am thinking that maybe it a more or a close tolerance type then
if the cheep ones did not fit. I need to change my hoses and will try
to remember to see just what the size is at that time. The funny thing
about the hose change is I have the two sitting here now just have to
get off my @$$ and do it.
