Towing Qusetion

Ok this is my first time to this forum (as a member) and wanted to kick start this thing with a towing question...

I recently UPgraded from a 10' F150 to a 11' F250 and it has the new instrument cluster and what not. I noticed you can select an active trailer and track the miles you put on it, which is awesome and a cool feautre. However, when i select my Ranger trailer for my boat i added on there it does not track the miles. Is this because it does not have electric brakes and the trailer says its "disconnected"?

It still highlights the trailer name when i select it and I can de-select it just fine. But it just dosent record any miles or anything.

Thanks for the info!

It works off 7 pin connector.

And welcome to FTE.

Thank you I appreciate it.

I am still a rookie with towing regarding all the different pins and connectors. But too make it easy to understand....I stick a 5 pin male into a adapter with a 5 pin female which in turn goes into the hole that is on the bumper, lol. guessing that wont make it register.

I wondered that myself when I hooked up my utility trailer...
What hdslider said --- guess only LARGE trailers count

those little trailers must not tax it enough to worry about it....

(but maybe there's method to the madness for the 7 pin trailers (typically means trailer brakes) so it gives you an indication of when brake, wheel bearing, etc... maintenance is needed ?!?)

and welcome to FTE ! where pics of new vehicles are REQUIRED reading

Well it will a find that trailer with brake setting so you dont have to mess with setting up amount of brake for each trailer.

It will track miles only if it detects the trailer - it does it automatically once you plug in your trailer connector (7 pin), however the trailer must be with electric brakes. I believe there may be a way to fool the system that you have electric brakes, so the truck will auto detect your trailer and then track your miles.

I'm guessing my XLT doesn't have this feature? If so, I've never come across it.

Only if you have the top XLT package (XLT premium package or something like that).
That will give you the 4.2L LCD screen in an XLT.

The basic info center on the other XLT options or XL does not have this feature.

I'm just making an educated guess here but I suspect if you take a couple of "discarded" (but operable) electric trailer brake solenoids and hook them up when you attach your "non-electric brake"trailer that the truck will then track the mileage, etc.

I'm pretty sure that that is the only way the trucks PCM et al knows there is something attached. The "extra" current supplied to the trailer brakes is the trigger for that feature.

If I can find a couple of brake solenoids, I'll try it just to confirm.

Hmmm, would just using a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter do it ?

I wonder - would fooling the truck that you have trailer brakes cause any issues ?!?

I don't know but heck, the stability controls, etc... can detect all kinds of things and adjust for it, wonder if the braking would adjust for assistance from trailer brakes that aren't there ?!?!

just wondering - I dunno

All the adapter does is "connect" thru the lights and ground from the 7 to 4 pin.. It does nothing regarding the brake wires (no termination, etc.).

To "detect" the brakes, the Truck must actually have some level of current drawn by the trailer brake circuit.
