Ok, so I picked up some Recon clear lenses because both my amber lenses had cracks in them, and because I think they really cool.
FOR THE LIFE OF ME, I can't get these damned mirrors apart. According to the directions you shove a screwdriver in the three tabs behind the mirrors and push down and presumably out to separate the skin from the mirror. Problem is, I push down and out and nothing happens. Is there an order to this or what the heck am I doing wrong. I'm giving 'em hell and no budging.
As an update for anyone who may happen to land here as a result of a google search, the way to do it is push down and out like hell on that bottom tab. All mine are already broken, unfortunately, and I don't believe there's any way I can get my passenger side cover off without breaking it, so I think I'll be sending these back.
Shame. Looked pretty sweet from the ones I'd seen before.
Ahh what a shame...they are pretty cool. I have the smoked version, and to be honest, I had our go-to local audio shop do the install when I had my HID's being put in. I had a go at it, but couldn't for the life of me get it off and didn't wanna break anything, and they did it in like 10 minutes
Alright, I'm updating this for anyone who may have been in my position and could have saved themselves hours and days of frustration. I went by the dealer and they printed out the TSB for me. First off, there are FOUR tabs that hold the covers in place, not three as Recon's instructions dictate. Secondly I was making WAY too much of the process. You just need to apply pressure to the outward piece of plastic.
In the picture above, the tab is broken in two pieces. There should be a cross piece there. You literally just have to push down on the exposed piece to release it from the tab. And despite popular belief, you don't have to give it hell either. Here's what four GOOD tabs look like
Once they're off (I could do a set in 3 minutes now), take a pair of pliers and gently squeeze on the two V shaped clips on the back of the lens to release the pieces.
Insert the new ones by inserting the three tabs in place and then shoving the V shaped clips through the back. Rinse/repeat for the other side.
Make sure you test the lights before reassembling the mirrors. I had one that I THOUGHT was connected well but turned out wasn't and I had to start over again. My driver's side tabs were in perfect shape while the passengers were totally demolished. Had to use a combination of super glue and RTV to get it to hold in place.
If you screw it up to the point beyond duct tape, you're looking at $214 EACH from Ford. It's absolutely absurd for what it is. Of course, that's how they earn the name "stealership" I suppose.
214 dollars has to bet he cost of the mirror, they are not usually going to sell you the skullcap separate, hence the cost. Glad you got it figured out and the lights look good!
I have a 2001 EX with no turn signals on my mirrors and I wanting to buy a new set of mirrors with the turn signals and get the Recon lenses.
Is my current mirror wiring set up to accept the turn signal part of the mirror?
Also it looks like the Recon lenses include three different lighting types, turn, park lights, and daytime running lights. I am assuming you would need to run more wiring for this?
