I have a 92 F150 2WD 5.0L with the E4OD transmission. The truck has 106,000 miles on it. All of a sudden tonight the speedometer quit working and the digital odometer reads nothing (not 0.0 miles, the display shows nothing at all). It also shifts rough and feels like it's revving higher than normal to keep the same speed that it used to. Shifting from 1st to 2nd is the roughest. I have had no major problems with it before. I drove about 20 miles tonight with no problems, I let it sit for a couple minutes while I was in a gas station. When I left is when I immediately noticed the shifting problem and the speedometer/odometer thing. I had been driving it earlier in the day with no problems also. The fluid and filter was changed about 5,000 miles ago. I was in a hurry tonight so I did not get a chance to check the fluid level. I did look under the truck but saw no visible major leakage. It doesn't seem to me though that the speedometer/odometer would quit working because of low fluid. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? Thanks.
I'm not positive about the tranny part, but the speedo / odometer is electric in that 92. It runs off the ring gear in the rear end. I'd start by checking for a blown fuse. Try replacing it, even if it looks fine.
I checked the fuses today and didn't see any blown. I found out that the vehicle speed sensor is in the rear differential. Can these go bad? Anybody had experience relplacing them? It almost seems like it would have to be the speed sensor since that is the only thing that controls the speedometer/odometer (I think?). Thanks.
Did you check both fuse boxes? a bad sender wouldn't kill the odometer, just the speedometer.
fuse box 1: inside cab above drivers left knee
fuse box 2: inside engine bay, behind air box, pretty good sized black rectangle, the *larger* fuses are in here, not the small dinky ones as in fuse box 1
If the speed sensor goes bad, or the signal is not getting to the computer via the wiring harness, then the computer sends a signal to the transmission that puts it into "limp" mode. That is why it is shifting hard and overrevving. Also, without knowing what the speed is, the computer is confused and doesn't know at which point to shift it. This happened on my 1990. Of course, mine has an analog speedo. The problem with mine was the speedo gear that was located in the transfer case. It is a nylon gear, and had worn out to the point that the gear that drives it couldn't turn it. It was reacting exactly how you describe yours as acting. I would recommend that you don't drive it until you repair it.
I have a similar problem with a DEAD speedo and odo in my 94 f150. I hooked up a code reader (autoxray) that detects the vehicle's speed through a DCL code monitor... the speed readings were normal for the most part, but every 3 reading (3 seconds apart or so) would be erratic: ie 15 mph, 15 mph, 109 mph, 16 mph, 15 mph, 58 mph. I'll check out the problems you guys mentioned and let you know what I come up with.
Matt
The reason your fuse keeps blowing is due to the internal harness on your transmission shifter. The control button on your shifter has a 3 wire harness that runs over the steering column. What usually happens is the insulation wears down from the steering being tilted up and down over a period of time and causing a short to the column. Sometimes you can repair the harness, but most cases you have to replace the shifter.
