Strange problem with my 89 351w bronco full size. After driving about a half hour,i turn it off and if i try to start it ,it is hard to start almost like the batterie is dead .but if i let it cool down for about 10 to 15 min's it starts fine .the batterie is good and the starter is good and the truck is not running hot ..? any one know whats up with it .is it timing.if so what should i do to time it ,whitch way should i move the distrbuter..sorry for the spelling ..thanks for the help..
If the timing is too advanced, the engine won't start. See my recent post about poor acceleration and backfiring solution. It might be applicable.
Regarding timing, don't worry about which way to rotate. Mark the 10 deg. BTDC setting on the vibration dampener w/ white marker paint. Hook your timing light up, disconnect the SPOUT electrical connector from the distributor, and loosen the distributor holddown bolt. Start the engine. Rotate the distributor with the electrical connector to the distributor to adjust the timing to your desired setting. Stop engine and secure distributor holddown bolt w/o disturbing distributor (tricker than you might think).
I eyeballed 6-8 degrees BTDC on my Bronco instead of 10 BTDC, and it made a world of difference.
read the reply..., it comes with it now a days..., if it,s not on the starter look on the fire wall, trace the wires from the starter to wherever they go.
it will look like a ''d'' cell battery and will have 2 or 3 terminals to it..
1 will go to the battery, 1 will go to the starter, 1 will go to the gnd., ...., if this doesnt help you, ask your local parts supplier ( preferably an older more established shop) good luck!!
I would try the timing first, i have had similar problems with Fords in the past.....same exact symptoms.....is also cheaper and does not cost you anything to try. a new starter and solenoid is going to cost some bucks......
you can try it..., but i'm tellin ya, its the solenoid..., if it was the timing, how would it start when its cold???it just doesnt make sense.., if anything it would be too rich, and flood... right??

first off, the mechanics of an engine change when it's warm, sensors, computer etc... It's a whole new ballgame when the engine is warm.
memento..., i walked your same path 3 years ago..., and it was the solenoid..., i had the same thoughts and suggestions as your getting, and after all was said and done, i would've saved myself a lot of time and aggrivation if i would have listened to the old man behind the counter..., CHANGE THE SOLENOID!
lemme know when you stop pinchin pennies, and want to fix the problem....
If it was the timing it would be hard to start hot or cold.You have to advance it a good bit for it to be hard to start.The ignition module on the dist. is prone to heat realated problems.Next time it does it check the voltage across the solenoid when trying to start.
