It's supposed to follow the curve with a lil bit o' padding but some fat azz has usually sat on the roof and inadvertently bent it down. It's tack welded front and rear.
Drill it out, re-curve it, and reinstall. Alternatively, replace it with framework for a ceiling mounted console with map lights, toggle switches, and maybe a CB.
You can redo it but i would put some kind of pad above it if not it might rattle a little from rubbing the sheet metal. Yeah, looks like somebody got on top of the roof and bent it down.
I ground the welds ,removed mine to be able to sand roof down, prime the roof and the brace, and re tack weld, insulate the ceiling, before adding panel By removing mine ,I was able to pull down the rear metal some and sand ,and spray with rust inhibitor and prime, which I would not been able to do with brace intack
the only time it would matter is lining up the one screw hole right smack in the middle of headliner with the brace. However, you don't have that problem.
I guess what i meant was: is there a front and a back or does it not matter?

I just checked out my two un-molested examples in the basement. The notch and hole go towards the windshield. Yours is in right. Both of my headliner braces run approximately 1/2" below the roof sheet metal. I pulled the headliner on my running truck the other day and found that at some time mice had set up camp in the insulation. I pulled the seat, dash panel and radio, then hosed down the entire interior. Sure smells better now, along with duesching out 37 years of accumulated dust. Much better to work on the wiring, before this I would feel grungy just getting in and out of the truck.
