I have an 84 Bronco in my shop that needs to have the caster and camber tweak. I posted something in the bronco section too, but i feel like i'll reach a broader audience (and better luck) here considering the front ends are so close. I have adjustable bushings installed, but need to double check myself and ensure that I have the right specs. I really need to talk to someone here that's aligned a lot of these style front ends and knows how to measure for the alignment specs.
what I did was measure ride height up front between the bottom of the spring perch and the top of the axle housing. I got 4" on the driver side and 4 1/2" on the passenger side (because its a split beam front end and the housings are different shapes on both sides) so i averaged them together to get 4 1/4". My info says that for that ride height, the camber specs are 1.50 degrees +- .75 and caster specs are 4.50 degrees +- 1.0. but that just seems so far out so i wanna be sure. the truck is supposedly stock height, but has taller tires on it.
am i missing something here? any help would be appreciated.
I did alignments for YEARS and did a lot of these trucks. I was taught to set them at .5 deg camber +- .5 and get the caster even. 1/16" toe in... always worked pretty well.
ok, that sounds like a good place to start. the chart i have said to put it at 1.5 degrees +-.75 and it just looks too odd for this truck. i'll probably bring it down to .5. any thoughts on an ideal caster spec? or maybe what you saw most commonly? i know that so long as they're even it should track straight without pulling, but this guy want good steering return.
i ended up re adjusting the bushing on the drivers side and put it to .5 camber like you mentioned. that left the caster at 4.5 degrees. so i got a kit to make the passenger side readings match. then set the toe and gave it a drive. felt good to me. the customer drove it and was quite happy with it. so i guess thats the end of that one. thanks for the help.
