Well exactly what the title says. I smelt some burning smell coming through my vents, so I started to figuring out what it was. At the time I saw the reflection of my lights in the back of another vehicle and I am very OCD about my lights being out so I pulled over to check it. The driver side is completely filled with smoke but the light was still working.
So most likely my wiring harness is screwed up because my HID's melted about a month ago. And instead of getting HIDs again I went and bought the new Sylvania zxe that produce a white light like HIDs. As soon as I put them in they were yellow and now they are smoking.
My question is does the whole harness have to be replaced, relay, or pigtails?
You have to replace any wire that has melted plus a bit to be sure.
Your looking for insulation damage and most likely the plugs may
have been damaged on both ends.
As mentioned, any melted wiring must be replaced. It might be easier to replace the fog light harness.
For future reference, high intensity bulbs, such as the Sylvania ZXE bulbs, should not be placed in small housings, as they emit more heat, and thus melt the reflectors and connectors.
Here are some pictures from the cargo lights on a 2005 Tundra that had Sylvania SilverStars in them. I was awarded a settlement for the cost of the repairs by Sylvania in this instance.
(I cant find the pictures, but here is an excerpt from one of the emails.)
In summary, the returned lamps meet all electrical and dimensional requirements outlined in the NHTSA specification for the 921. We believe that this reflector (CHMSL cargo lamp assembly) has an unusually small design causing the lamps to overheat and melt the surrounding surface areas as well as lamp connectors. As a result, we don’t recommend that you try to use these lamps in this assembly in the future for risk of additional damage. Our engineering department would like to further evaluate this specific reflector so we ask that you replace the unit and send the damaged unit here.
I’ve attached a prepaid FedEx shipping label that will allow you to send the damaged housing here at our expense. Please submit a copy of the receipt for replacement with the damaged reflector, and we will reimburse you for the cost of replacement.
Having installed HIDs, I find it very unlikely that you will find anyone who is willing to reimburse you for the damage, this is purely for educational purposes. And I just had a cup of coffee..
