Running Without Glow Plugs Installed

Hey all, just picked up an '85 F-250 with a 6.9. The PO sold it due to electrical issues, which I'm now dealing with.

Just pulled the first glow plug, it's an Autolite 1107 and it's been near burned the ground. I'm going to throw some Motorcraft plugs in it eventually, but I've got a question:

Can I run this engine without the glow plugs installed? It's about 100*f today, so I imagine I wouldn't even need ether to start it right now. I'd like to remove all the plugs so I don't have to worry about them breaking off inside the engine, but on the other hand I'd still like to drive the truck. It seems like they need to be installed, considering they block a fairly large hole that leads directly into the cylinder, but I'm more versed in electrical engineering than mechanical, so who knows?

Many thanks,

- Apt.

No, you would loose too much compression. And even if it managed to start it would run and sound like hell.

That's about what I figured. Thanks for the confirmation.

Think I could break the heating elements on the plugs flush with the thread?

Then I could plug the holes without having these really scary slivers of metal acting as my only defense against a hunk of heating element falling into my engine.

I can't see that there'd be a problem with that. Additionally I'd pull the purple wire off the GP relay to prevent the system from attempting to cycle.

I'm not sure why you're so worried about them breaking off. If you unplug the wire to them all, and the glowplug relay, they won't get any worse than they are now.

Get the Motorcrafts on order, disconnect the wires, and just use the tiniest bit of ether for now. Unless I'm mistaken, the only time they're likely to break off is on removal, but only if they'd already swollen up.

I would agree with tec, if they haven't broken off yet, I'd put them back in as is and replace them asap, you are risking debris in your cylinders by breaking things off.

@ tecgod13

Yeah, I suppose that's the smartest option. Pulling the first one kinda freaked me out - The plug isn't swollen, but it's melted and deformed. There's a fairly large chunk of metal missing. I'd imagine if one of the other glow plugs suffered a similar fate but to a more extreme degree, the entire heating element could be ready to break in half. Probably just paranoid, however. First time I've owned a truck older than myself.

@ Chevy_Eater

lol, I've read quite a bit about that purple wire. From what I understand, before this intense rats nest of various red and yellow wire appeared in my engine compartment, it once existed. Whichever lead served that purpose is now sitting on my workbench, as the wiring harness and relay + manual switch circuit get reworked.

Guess I'll spend tomorrow on rewiring the turn signals, emergency lights, cab light, and ignition to toggle switches...

Thanks guys.
