I have some cash stuck into this but I have more power than a stock V-8 and doing it with a 6. I also never planned on it geting this out of hand. it all started with a filter! I would say I am at the point cash wise were it would be a toss up in price depending on the motor i would of got, I think I would of gotten a crate motor. If a v-8 car/truck out runs me well he should got more motor but when I run down a v-8 it is the greatest feeling. most are like you got a v-8 huh? nope just a v-6.
look guys on my ranger i have 2 cats. but the bolts do not line up right on the header system. I do not plan on cutting both cats. just one of them so that i can install my headers. will that cause a problem with my proformance? the o2 sensors will still be intake. The shop tells me to go ahead and cut the bitchessss!!!!!!!!!!!!! yyahh or nnnahhhh.
Nope ... it will actually increase perf a little because one cat's gone... (as long as you don't remove the O2 sensor after the cat, if any) If there's no sensor after the cat you can, if you want to, remove both without getting any codes.
you have a o2 behind your cats and it measure how well your cats ar working. you may be okay with one cat but I can't say for sure if you do get a MIL you can get a MIL elimanator for about $20 and that will replace the o2 and turn off the light.
Depending on how deep your pockets are and if you want to stick with the same engine, look into a supercharger for the 4.0. There are many listed on the auction sites fairly reasonable (compared to buying from a big company). Or if you are seriously looking at the V-8 option, look to Advanced Adapters for guidance. They have the books and conversion kits for that application. You could realistically put in a 351w and stroke it out to over 400 cubic inches. The 393 is the cheapest and easiest stroker, but it's a thought. Like I said, it depends on how deep your pockets go.
Thinking outside the box doesn't do a lot of good if you can't get your vehicle licensed. You could think about it a lot while it sits in the driveway. I guess you could always swap the original engine back in every other year when it's time for testing. As far as voting people out of office, if there was someone to vote in that would be willing to change the laws, I'd be all for it. The problem is finding a candidate who will put "I want to reverse emissions laws" on their campain ticket.
I currently live in a state that only has emissions regulations on major cities, not the whole state. I came from a state that had NO emissions regulations (not where you had to be tested anyway). It is a consideration when doing a V-8 upgrade, but not totally unfeasable. If you use common sense during your build and don't go hog wild sacrificing all considerations for your emissions. You can do that and still have an ACE kicking fast truck.
I hate to throw fuel on the fire but gutting the cats does cause back pressure, when the hot exhaust gases enter the empty cat chamber it expands and cools, hot gases flow better the cool gaes. Also pipes that are to big for the engine cause poor flow.
