Not sure if you have an auto or not but this kit is awesome if you do. This may not "add" HP to the motor, but is sure does help get it to the wheels. I bought mine from www.txchange.com. It was something like $30 to my door. Takes about 2-4 hours to install yourself, or take it to a pro and pay $100-200. This kit absolutely brought my tranny to life. No more sluggish shifts. No more occasional gear hunting. And it's not too harsh either. I'm tellin' ya man, if you've got the power in your motor, then you need to add one of these! You WILL accelerate faster with this kit.
To get any benefit out of an exhaust system, you have to first have a motor that needs the extra flow , like a V-8 . Nothing beats more cubic inches. Go for a V-8 if you really are serious about more power , or go the supercharging route.
Yea, my 89 gained so much power after I cleaned out the guts in the cats with the 2.9 that I couldn't tell the difference. Now when I stuck the 302 in there ------- I said : WOW I could have had a V-8!!!!
gutting your cats is a bad idea, for many reason and you willnot gain anything for power I know a few guys that made back to back dyno runs with gutted cats and with a stock cat (supercharged 4.0's)
You may not gain anything , but you sure won't lose anything either. If the backpressure created by the cats is so beneficial, why then would you want to get rid of any other backpressure creating restrictions down stream from the cats? As in 2.5 inch+ single and dual exhaust systems with low restriction mufflers and "mandrel bent" pipe on a motor that can't even use half the extra space in the system. Think about it. Most of what anybody gains from high dollar exhaust systems doesn't even register on the seat of the pants scale and the perceived benefit is mostly created in one's own mind. I'm running a 2 inch muffler shop exhaust with 30 inch glasspacks behind a 325 HP 302 in my Ranger and it runs just fine. And I ain't about to go out and spend 400+dollars for a system like that.
well you will lose a good flow due to the exhaust expandind in the oping and then having to compress again to get out, you are beter off replacing it with a pipe, I take you you have 2 2.00 pipe not one? if you hve one you must have a ton of backpressure! I have taked to a few exhaust companys and they all say the the 300 hp mark is the limits for 2.5 inch single pipe. not saying you can't have more hp than that but you will not get what you should. I have 2.5 inch mandrel.... on mine and but over 200 to the ground so I am in the balpark you are claiming and I know I am using all the size I have due to the high level of back pressure. I am at the limit and will go to a single 3.000 inch pipe when my heads and new cam are done.
200 hp on the ground? with a V-6? What are you smokin? Yes I have 2 inch duals. You've also got to remember that the exhaust companies are in the business of SELLING YOU AN EXHAUST SYSTEM. You really think they're about to tell you that your V-6 doesn't need that extra wasted space in your pipes? When you do get your heads and cam done, run it as is, then spend more on the exhaust if you feel it's holding you back. If you think that exhaust having to contract after expanding in an empty chamber ( gutted cats) is a bad thing , then why do the dirt bikers get off on expansion chambers in their exhaust's?
a dirt bike motor is way diferent that a truck motor, and yes right now I have 200+ to the ground and do a few others with a simalier setup. I have everybolt one and am running 9psi with the option of a 12psi when I want to play. and yes I will out run most mustangs in my town. I have been in may of these discustions before and many people tend to think the way you do, so you aree not alone.
as for your piping you would be best off with a manderal bend dual 2.25 with a X or H pipe.
I'm about to swap on a set of Canfield aluminum heads and an Edelbrock Vic Jr. next month. When I do , I'm going to replace the 2 in and glasspacks with a set of Shelby style Tri-Y headers and a 2.25 in muffler shop special ( no mandrels here, don't need them) and either a set of turbos or maybe some quiet factory style mufflers ( I like sleepers )How much did all those bolt on mods run you? Might have been better off swapping a V-8 in.
Many places that have emissions inspections won't allow that kind of swap. Where I'm at, you are limited to what kinds of engines were available that year in that model. So, getting a V8 Ranger to pass emissions would be a really cool magic trick.
